Aside our own enjoyment, what is the purpose of life.

You might say it's to create/continue future life, but what's the purpose of THOSE lives?

It's not like we're helping the environment.

You know, the whole "We're here for God's entertainment" thing is getting old. Seriously, maybe it's because I'm an atheist, but I think it would've been a lot easier if he would've just gotten Pay-Per-View. [[Or whatever it's called.]]

But still..what is the purpose of life?

I agree...rather depressing isn't it. Edit: Just try to be happy you're alive. Each and every one of us are extremely lucky to be alive. The chances of you being alive are incredibly slim. It means, if your parents hadn't happened to meet, you wouldn't be here. The same goes for your grandparents, your great grandparents.... Keep going down the line and it'd uncover trillions upon trillions of circumstances that were a threat to us not being here. But all of these circumstances took place from the time we were mere fish swimming in the ocean. This is probably the only life we'll get. Other people don't have it as good as us. Each and every one of us should soak up all the happiness life has to bring and treat each other peacefully, with love and respect because we're all on the same boat and life is emotional.

To say there is a purpose to life implies that there is a creator that gave it purpose. My opinion is that life just is.

Life formed from inorganic matter (something to do with amino acids, carbon, etc., but I won't get into that). Evolution ran its course and here we are today--as animals that have a greater sense of self-awareness than ever. It is such a great level of intelligence that we can think of these types of things. And to this particular question, we are attempting to find meaning in something that is essentially meaningless. Life wasn't necessarily supposed to happen.

So, there is no ultimate purpose to life. We aren't here for a reason; we just happen to be here. The way humans act is such that they do things to entertain and reward themselves (in the case of the religious, they believe it all comes after death), which becomes a person's primary purpose in this existence on a random rock ball in space we call life. Happy existence.

To live. Life is the purpose of life. It's its own purpose. It serves no purpose but itself and other life. So as long as we're here for no other particular reason, we might as well make the most of it that we can. It can be a treat or it can be a *****. I seriously doubt that the purpose of life is to suffer, so it must be to enjoy. What gives you real joy in life, not just thrills and excitement? Loving, caring, learning and understanding? Is there anything else? The challenge is to know what brings joy into your life and others and live accordingly. Sometimes I think that life is not to be so scrutinized and analyzed, it is simply to be lived.

You say you are an atheist so I'm guessing you've heard this many times:

The purpose of life is to give life purpose

The meaning of life is to give life meaning

Actually, I get much benefit from the views of atheists because on the whole they are - well - so existential! :) And being as God is no respecter of persons (yes, I'm Christian) then it makes no sense to try to explain our existence in terms of who God chooses to like and who He will hit with a big silly ugly stick....

And in Christian terms this translates as follows --
Life is like the treasure in the parable of the rich man who left his servants with varying amounts of money and went away for a time. When that rich man returned, he rewarded the servants who had put the money to good use and gained return from it, and he punished the servant who took the money and burried it in the back yard.

That is the purpose of life from both an existential and theistic point of view.

What is the purpose of your life? I think thats a better question, its hard to talk on behalf of everyone else...As for me I want my life to be the time in which I can come closer to God. Have you read the Upanishads? You should it may help you see other perspective of religion, which by the way I think it does not contradict Christianity

The purpose of life is to live as fully as on can, and to contribute as much as you can, to making this world the best place it can be. My God give peoples one life after another, so one can keep getting better, at exploring the infinate challenges this reality provides. One only needs this reality, in order to exercise all aspects of ones spirit, and therefore, keep it healthy and well stimulated, with the whole array of sensations and feelings.

This life is a life of trial. The purpose as a whole is to brng everything back into God,and eventually, although it will take many ages God will become ALL in ALL. Christ came to save ALL,and will but eac in there order. Some will not be in this life,or age. But they ALL will. We are made in His image, and He will not have one lost, but will have ALL come to truth. He is a loving, and merciful God. He only uses judgement to better a person and bring him or her closer to Him. None can hide from Him,and none is so lost that His saving hand can't reach.

The purpose of life is what you assign to it.

For each of us, our purpose may be different. For some, it is to do god's will. For others, it will be to raise their children to be successful members of society.

As an atheist, my purpose in life is to love my family, provide for my children's education, and leave the world a better place than when I joined it.

The purpose of life is to prepare for the ultimate event......your death. We will continue existing in eternity in either heaven or hell, whether you believe in it or not. So prepare your soul for the next world during this short time here on earth.
