You smile and nod and ignore it, you just get through it. This is a sign of insecurity and you should feel a bit sorry for that person. Just know they really find themselves less than everyone else.

I always drop the name of a fictional character. Gets people laughing and makes it obvious to the dropper that what he or she is doing is pretty annoying. They'll stop for sure.

It is never in good taste to embarrass someone or to make them look or feel bad. You should just ignore the name dropping. I don't know how you can say anything with out being rude which is not in proper etiquette either. The only thing I can think to do is politely and subtly turn the coversation elsewhere.

I pity the name dropper. The people who brag most about their friendship with the big frog in my pond are people who don't have anything else to brag about. Let 'em run, they aren't bothering you or reducing your ability to hang with big shots. Just let the reference fly over your head.
"Oh, you work in finance? You must know who BIG NAME is. He's a close personal friend of mine." "Of course, everyone in finance knows who BIG NAME is. I work in BIGBANK'S downtown office. It's so great, from my window I can see etc etc."
A name dropper is pathetic, so dont worry about him.

i'm a name dropper but i dont do it on purpose.
i say, tell the person that it annoys you and the person will most likely stop but for some people like me i forget sometimes that not everyone knows the people i know. i dont mean to be rude when i do i just do it.
sorry......oops

Two things....
In casual conversations, I can just ignore those names. The content of the conversation doesn't change.
In business, I acknowledge them but quickly follow that with... "yes, but let's get back to the issue at hand...." and turn the table around.
Works well...

I just act casual and like its not a big deal. Things aren't a big deal unless you make them a big deal.
