1. Focus on one person at a time.
2. Get them talking by asking questions they would like to answer, but make them open ended questions. Example - if you say to someone "How many years have you owned your own company?" You might have them say "Six years". But if you say something like "Wow - you own your own company - how did you do that? What got you started in (your industry)" then they will talk.
3. Be interested in what they are interested in. Research what they are interested in.
4. Remember everyone's name. It is a huge pain but it pays off well.
5. Read "How to make friends and influence people". A used copy at this link will cost you $4.50.
Doing all of these things is a pain to be sure. You just have to decide which is more of a pain - remaining socially awkward or reading a book.
Good luck!

If it's a kind of a speech you are talking of, then just search for a point in the back, maybe the wall or a picture, to look and focus at. Don't even look at the big group of people in front of you.

I can (and have) give speeches in front of hundred of people or talk one on one but I get very uncomfortable in small groups of like 5-20 people. Just the way we are I guess

Believe it or not, I have a reputation as an excellent public speaker. (You think YOU'RE surprised!)
What I do is: I focus on one person in or near the front of the audience that I can make eye-contact with. I talk to them. This person varies as I speak, but I always speak to just one person.
It works.
The "speech" seems to be natural, and by and large, it is!
Good luck! }:>

All you can really do is to keep talking to them, and perhaps raise your self esteem a bit as well. The more you do something the easier it becomes, including overcoming shyness. You can also read books that raise your self esteem and I will give you a link to one here, As a man thinketh or even think and grow rich there also. Hope you get past this!

i use to be shy and i found the best way was to talk to people during those social times where i felt shy. i wouldnt even talk to employees at a store if i were looking for something b/c i was shy. i became less shy by making myself ask them

just keep practicing talking to people. last year i couldn't hardly talk to any of my teachers or cute guys that were my friends without my face getting really red. now, this year, i am in drama and i try to talk to new people. it takes time. before you start talking just take a deep breath. good luck!

it sounds as though you might be doing the right thing to start with, a lot of people talk, but most have nothing to say?
