It stands for General Educational Development. The Tests of General Educational Development, or GED Tests, is a battery of five tests that, when passed, certifies the taker has American or Canadian high school-level academic skills. Only individuals who have not earned a high school diploma may take the GED Tests. The tests were originally created to help veterans after World War II return to civilian life. Common reasons for GED recipients not having received a high school diploma include immigration to the United States or Canada; homeschooling; and leaving high school early due to a lack of interest, the inability to pass required courses and/or mandatory achievement tests, the need to work, or personal problems.

General Educational Development. If you did not earn a high school diploma you are allowed to take the GED test and obtain a degree that is the equivalent.

A GED is the equivalent of a high school diploma. If you dropped out of high school you can go back later and take classes to earn a high school diploma. After you have a high school diploma (or GED) you are then eligible to enroll in university.

It's what a lot of people do when they drop out of school. They go back and get a GED instead of getting a dipolma. "General Education Degree"- it's equal to a dipolma.. but some companies like GED's better because it's a lot harder than high school.

It's an alternative for a high school diploma. If you didn't attend high school or you dropped out a GED is almost as good as a high school diploma.
