My parents own a cake shop here in New Zealand. Banana cake is one of the favourites. Chocolate glace icing is the best kind.

We use the metric measuring system here, not sure on what you guys use, but if you look to convert it over, I am sure this icing recipe will work for you.

Chocolate Icing

2 cups icing sugar
2 tablespoons of cocoa
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence

Sift icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl. Add butter and essense. Add sufficient boiling water to mix to a spreadable consistancy.

Cream cheese frosting with lower sugar -- it will play nicely off of the banana, which will be very sweet. I suggest:

1 block of philadelphia (or other) cream cheese
1/2 cup of sugar
stick of butter
2 tsp vanilla extract

[sorry if you're euro -- I don't know the metric amounts]

first, soften the butter (leave out at room temp or microwave for a few secs). If you don't, it won't incorporate completely and you'll end with chunks of butter. mix the philly cc, the butter and the vanilla. It will gradually become easier to mix, and you'll eventually be able to beat it. The more you beat it, the fluffier it will be (and the easier to spread). If you have an electric mixer, you should use it!

This is very easy and so yummy, I can eat it with a spoon. It tastes like spreadable cheesecake!

This is a delicious icing...

Penuche frosting:

3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 cups confectioners' sugar

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the 3 tablespoons butter and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1 minute, or until slightly thickened. Cool slightly, then stir in the milk, and beat until smooth. Gradually stir in 2 cups confectioners' sugar until frosting has reached desired consistency. Frost right away.

I've made this a few times now. I've added a bit of vanilla or maple flavouring with the icing sugar. You just have to be careful not to let it boil too hot or you'll end up with hard caramel!

cream cheese icing
if you can find almond extract, add a few drops of it to the icing as well

i dont think butter cream would taste very good on a banana cake...it would be too sweet, you need the "sour-ness" of the cream cheese to even it out :)

CREAM CHEESE ICING:
Beat together 8 oz cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, softened,
with 4 cups icing sugar, adjusting sugar for consistency.
Can be flavoured with 1 1/2 tsp vanilla, &/or
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted.

It's called burt butter icing. sounds bad, but very, very good. I usually make it and put it on pumpkin cookies, but I have put it on bannana cake. Its very simple. It's nothing more than butter, vanilla, and sugar. I do it in a frying pan. It just takes a few minutes. Just google burnt butter icing the recipe will be there. Hope I helped! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
