A man with a light appetite could not finish his Pizza. In fact, he could only eat exactly half of it.

If the diameter of the pizza was 50cm, and the half-pizza was a perfect semicircle, what is the area of the smallest square box, in square centimetres, that could contain the half pizza? Please disregard the thickness of the box, round to the nearest whole number, and answer the question!

I have no idea what the answer is, anyone else know? My friend gave it to me!

Imagine starting by putting the diameter of the pizza directly in the corner of a box but at a 45 degree angle. That makes a 45-45-90 triangle with the hypotenuse being 50 cm.

Now take the midpoint of this and draw your semicircle. The distance from this point up will be the radius (25 cm). And down will be the side of a triangle with hypotenuse 25. This ends up being 25/√2.

So one dimension would be 25 + 25/√2, and so would the other. Multiplying this together we get:

(25 + 25/√2)²
= 25² + 50*25/√2 + (25/√2)²
= 625 + 1250/√2 + 625/2
≈ 625 + 883.883 + 312.5
≈ 1821.383 sq. cm

Since they want us to round to the nearest whole number, the answer is 1821 sq. cm

I drew the following diagram to help explain things.

First things first, it's asking for a square, 50x25 gives the same area, as the square you're looking for, but it's not the smallest that will fit it, 50x50 completely disregards the half taken out.

The problem with this one is that you have to rotate the half pizza, but respect the curve.

Also, this is very obviously #238 of lenny.

The pizza is 50cm long and 25cm wide since it is half a cirlce. So you have 50x25= 1250 cm squared. But if the box has to be exactly square then its 50x50= 2500cm squared.

i'm such partial to an angled bob. I actual have at present cut back 12 inches of my hair and function an angled bob and that i like it. i'm getting sooo many compliments. in case you opt for this form/cut back ask the hairdresser to have the back of your hair with a definate hairline, no longer STACKED. As for shade, i could save your organic shade, yet choose for some medium sized highlights. i could pass with blonde highlights. solid success! in case you opt for to verify a photograph of what i'm conversing approximately, google photographs of Jenny McCarthy while she became on 2 & a a million/2 adult adult males.

2500 square cms. 50x50 which would be the dimensions of the box, assuming that the pizza was perfectly round.
