the intensity at which exercise is performed at should dictate the frequency. low intensity exercise can be performed daily while high intensity exercise can not. low intensity exercise does not tax the central nervous system much at all. the CNS recovers more slowly from exercise as does skeletal muscle. training intensity should be varied to keep from burning out the CNS like:

Mon - Low Intensity
Wed - Med Intensity
Fri - High Intensity

Mon- High Intensity
Wed - Low Intensity
Fri - High Intensity

* there are endless ways to vary your training intensity. the training intensity of cardio and resistance training should be be varied

Not cardio, which you should do on most days of the week (4-6), but it is a good idea to take one day off a week so you don't get burned out.

It is a good idea to rest muscle groups for 48 hours before working them out again, but you can do your arms one day, legs the next, arms the next, etc. Of course, work out the rest of your body (back, abs), but you get the picture.
