I think most of our Holidays came from necessity: Beltane (May 1) to bless the fields & ensure fertility, Harvest (Lammas, Mabon) to thank the Gods for abundance, Samhain (Oct. 31) to honor the dead, Yule (Dec. 21) to beg the Gods to bring back the light.
I'm sure it helped to share these times, the fellowship (and the feast) with friends & family.
I know it works for us.
Yes, our Holidays are pretty darn cool.

I have read some where that when St. Paul went to Rome to preach his version of Christianity and said to them that they have to celebrate birth day of Jesus which was in summer, the Pagans refused to accept saying we are extremely busy in summer in cutting our harvests and have no time for the celebrations. They said we can celebrate in winter when our lands are covered with snow and we are inside homes drinking, dancing and socializing. So Paul moved the birth day of Jesus from summer to winter when lands are covered with snow.
On Pagans insistance to continue their life style, St. Paul also allowed them to continue eating pig's meat and drinking alcohols. These Laws are made by God and only God can change them and not a man. The Roman Catholic Pope gave permission for opening the first Bank in England that started charging interest on borrowing loans though susury was strictly prohibited in Torah and Bible both.
All the three things are worst sins and God will punish all those who are consuming all alcohol, pig meat and interest money.

that's not entirely fair.
pagan, be definition, is everyone who isn't Christian.
in other words, everyone who lived before 30ad.
chances are that people in different parts of the world would come up with some sweet holidays

Well duh. Pagans still know how to party. Not that Christians don't. Ever been to a Catholic wedding?
