The 7mm-08 is bigger. The 270 would be an awesome long range rilfe. Same as the 7mm. But as far as for brush the 7mm should handle alot better in brush. Just remember, the 7mm is a bigger bullet and will need more power or grain to make a long distance than the 270. Either would be good for deer hunting. Decide where you are hunting. If you know you will be hunting in an open area go with the 270. If you know there will be alot of brush then go with the 7mm. Goodluck.

Which is bigger, the 7mm-08 or the .270 Winchester? Let's see:

The 7mm-08 is a .308 Winchester necked down to 7mm (.28 caliber); the .270 is a .30-06 necked down to .27 caliber. So... The 7mm-08 shoots a slightly wider slug, but the .270 is bigger length-wise. The .270 casing is approx. 63mm long while the .308 is 51mm long. So I'd say overall the .270 is bigger as the 7mm-08 is only .01 of an inch wider and 13mm shorter in case length.

Best.

270 Win shoots a .277" bullet usually of 130-150 grains' weight compared to the 7mm08's .284" bullet of 140-160 grains' weight. The 270's 150 grain bullet has a sectional density of .279 compared to the 160 grain 7mm's S.D. of .283.
The case of the 270 is from the 30-06, and that of the 7mm (surprise!) that of the shorter 308, so you can load, as an example, 52 grains of H4350 to push the 150 grain 270 to about 2750 fps, compared to 44.5 grains of H4350 pushing the 160 grain 7mm bullet to a bit under 2700 fps.
I'm a huge fan of the 7mm08, having bought three of them for various family members (though I have to admit I use 7mm Mauser instead, since I can handload it to slightly better performance). It's an efficient little cartridge that seems to have considerable inherent accuracy, and it's been easy in all 3 rifles to find a wide variety of loads that shoot and perform well. As you can see from the numbers, the difference between the two, other than the more efficient use of powder, is trivial, and it's doubtful any game shot with either would ever know the difference.

The 7mm. 08 has the larger diameter .28"
The 270 has th larger case, more powder.
As to use, depends on the range & the game.
270 for long shots on deer & antilope.
7mm for something a bit bigger, but at shorter ranges.

7mm-08 is the larger caliber by .007 inch.
7mm = .284
.270 = .277
Both are fairly long range, flat shooting , but I would prefer the 7mm-08 because of the slightly heavier bullet..

I'd prefer the 270 Win Short Mag! Flatter, faster, more powerful than the 270. And with little extra recoil.
