Officially retired. I make just under $12,000 annually from pensions. 7 more years and I can go with Social Security as well, upping my income better than 100%
But I volunteer, teaching 3 junior college classes, volunteer as a Reserve Sheriff Officer and volunteer at the VA Hospital, mainly as a wheelchair pusher. All three positions do feed my caffine habit though. And if I work over 4 hours on sheriff duty, they buy my lunch.
Past year gas prices have sure hurt though. I have to travel 30 one way to volunteer and drive a 1976 Ford truck with a 460 engine. So, volunteering can be expensive. But, I love doing it!
Rent? Well there, I economize. I live in a 34 foot travel trailer that I own. I rent about 1/2 acre of private land for $160 a month. Water&Sewer charge is $95 a month. I use maybe 500 gallons of water monthly. (Hey! How long a shower would you take with a 6.2 gallon hot water tank?) I live in Oregon and we have the second highest minimum wage in the country at $7.95 an hour. My nearby town has a population of about 20,000. More than 2,200 are working homeless. They cannot obtain affordable rental housing that starts about $800 nor pets. Most all have jobs and camp out rear round up and down our two beautiful rivers. One advantage is plenty of trout and salmon swim through your living room. I have it SOOOO good with my travel trailer.
Back when I got paid, I was a Metrologist, Electronic Engineer and Human Resources Regional Manager for a Credit Research reporting company. (no, not all at one time)

The housing market is not based on salaries of the general public. Housing costs are based on area and where the money is...Your house that was $63,000 10 years ago is now worth $500,000. Did you get a raise? Not me, as a matter of fact, this University educated woman is making less now, than I did ten years ago. So wages have come down. Greed has increased and there is your answer.
What if we all moved to areas of the country where housing costs are low - left these greedy home owners with the expensive empty houses to sell to go under. Boycott high prices in all categories of life.
The government is well aware of the fact that wages are 4x lower and decreasing every year, while cost of living continues to increase.
The greedy are not yet seeing beyond the greed into the hole they've dug for themselves.
The last chapter of the Bible talks about houses being empty while people lay in the streets in the end times and many other things as a "sign of the end."
If many of you don't believe the Bible, why is what it says coming true?

I'm a college student, trying to finish my A.A, wondering where to go next in life and follow my husband. I have free rent after we moved back from another college situation that didn't work and would've had to pay 400 a month for rent in an apartment back in our hometowns so we are living with my parents as a result, and we live in a VERY rural area(bootheel of missouri, population of biggest town in our county is 4000). My husband and I both make 6.50 an hour. I'm a waitress (1 month) and work 15 hours,( I was a UPS package handler 8.50 an hour anywhere from 3 hours to 20 hours a week).... he is a stock boy and works 32 hours(8 months). I'm praying to get a better job(full time/benefits!) to save up for college and a house. God will provide however.

I am a project coordinator for a marketing and communications firm. I make $45,000/year for a 35hour workweek. I've had this job since August fo this year.
I also have my own home staging ReDesign firm. With that, I make about $36,000/year. I've been doing this for 2 years.
I also do translation from French to English on the side and with that, I make approximately $62,000/year. I've been doing this for 1 year now.
And to think... I gave up working in criminal law in 2005! I've never been sooooo happy! When I worked in law, I would have about a 85 hour work week. Now, I have the steady job in marketing, and do both of my other company work in the evening after the kids are in bed, or on the weekend, when they're out doing their sports and stuff.
I've never been so happy to give up a job that was only making everyone else happy. At first, I was scared to strike out on my own 2 years ago, but ever since then, things just keep getting better and better.
As for housing, yeah... it's expensive. I bought my house in 2002 and paid 135k for it. Just this month, I sold it for 271,500k!!!!!!! Fantastic profit. Mind you, I staged my home for sale... and it worked!
But yeah, housing costs are about to go down. Way down. Just give it till February of 2008, you'll see.
The problem is, interest rates are going to go up... And that causes problems for everyone, renters and owners alike...
So... hope I answered your question...

I freelance in the fiction world.
I make probably $20,000 a year, and I'm not even trying. If, when I began (4 years ago), I really sat down to write and had the the contacts that I do now, I could easily made 50+ grand.
And I actually love my job. I write what I want.
PS I work 20 hrs a week

I am an SLP, Speech Language Pathologist, working on my masters while teaching at a primary school. I am doing this until I can get my masters in Speech Therapy and can work in hospitals. Good profession, I make 40k a year right now and the state is paying for my graduate school for my masters. After that I will be making close to 100k annually.
