My son has recently started flapping one of his hands. Not all the time, just on and off. He has good eye contact, points at objects, brings me toys to play with him, and seems fine otherwise. He has also lately stopped wanting to look at the camera when I want to take a picture of him. He only has one or two clear words, but babbles alot. Anything to worry about? I just worry about him regressing.

I would have the pedi test him for atusim at his 18 month apointment. I know that flapping is a sign of it. My son is 2 and he also dosnt have too many words but other than that is perfectly normal and we are going to be talking to the dr about it tomorrow. If you are really really worried make an apointment especially for it if its more of a passing concern just wait until he goes in for his 18 month check up.

If you are concerned, go to your pediatrician and tell him what you have written. He can reassure you or send you for more testing if he thinks it's an issue for concern. There are a great number of children showing signs of autism and asperger's (high level autism); it is far better to be safe and have him checked and then find there is not a problem. If there is a concern, then you are finding out very early and that is key if there ends up being a diagnosis. Children flap when they are that age. He should start talking soon but some children are late talkers and it could take a number of months. If I were you, I would go to the doctor and get some reassurance so you won't be worried. He is probably just fine.

My soon to be four year old does hand flapping. He usually only does it when he's excited or has to pee. He also has to line up his toys in a perfect line. He is extremely affectionate, and doesn't have any other symptoms of autism. I've never had him officially tested but his preschooler seems to think that he's okay because we've discussed it. I took him to his kindergarten screening and he's at or above where he is supposed to be. I remember when I was little flapping my hands. That being said, if you have any inclination that your child has autism I would get it investigated as early as possible because the earlier you get interventions, the less severe it can be.

This is a sign of autism. I have worked with autistic children for years, each and everyone of them "hand flaps". You definitely need to make an appt. with your child's pediatrician. And then you can go from there. I am not saying that your child is autistic, but he does need to see a professional so they can evaluate him. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Autism-1010/Hand-Flapping-toe-walking.htm
Good luck and I truly wish you the best!

Boys tend to lag in gross motor skills so don't stress. Mention your concerns to your doctor at your 18/20 month wellness. My son was similar until 20 months (just now he turned) and vocabulary has exploded!

Honestly, he has all kinds of new words. And, started repeating words. Not perfectly, but he'll try to say them after I say them.

Obviously you should check with your pediatrician, but on balance, I think that he is OK. He may be one that is slow to talk, but once he starts, you can never get him to stop.

It could be autism.
Autistic kids often regress.
Get it checked out.
