Ancestry.Com states it is Southern English, patronynimic for David. In other words, when people took surnames, some sons of men named David became Davis.

My Mother also had Davis as a surname. It is of English or Welsh origin.

I googled it and came up with:

Definition: Son of David (beloved).

Surname Origin: English, Welsh

Alternate Surname Spellings: DAVIES (Welsh), DAVID, DAVIDSON, DAVISON
