Our personalities and behaviors are constantly changing, growing, becoming more complex as time passes in order to deal with the things life throws our way.

Some of our behaviors, aspects of our personalities are masculine, some feminine. Masculinity is characterized by assertiveness, aggressiveness, initiative, action, etc. Femininity is characterized by passivity, gentle persuasion, even manipulation. Both traits are valuable to both men and women.

Your boyfriend's dream has two feminine images, you and his mom. His making love with you is symbolic probably of integrating some of those feminine aspects into his personality or behavior. Now his mom watching, not doing anything, indicates that a pre-existent complex of feminine behaviors/ concepts which may very well have originated in interactions with his mom as a child is more or less observing what is going on, but not yet placing a value judgement on it. (Although it may be a "calculating" gaze!) The exact nature of what might be expected from the mom image, whether the "wise woman" or "witch-crone" is not indicated in the dream. That could be a complex thing to unravel. Mother/son relationships are complex and intense. (Moms do love their children y'know) I would hope, for your sake, that making love with you in the dream indicates that he's learning to be appreciative of your vulnerability and is learning to be kind, considerate, even tender.

Namaste!

According to the activation-synthesis theory of dreams, the dream probably has no meaning at all. (Sorry, that may not be what you wanted to hear.)

Although dreams are influenced by our thoughts throughout the course of the day, this does not mean they are special messages to us that we should carefully consider.

Here's one perspective:

"Activation Synthesis Theory is a neurobiological theory of dreams, put forward by James Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley in 1977, which states that dreams are a random event caused by firing of neurons in the brain. This random firing sends signals to the body's motor systems, but because of a paralysis that occurs during REM sleep, the brain is faced with a paradox. It synthesizes a narrative by drawing on memory systems in an attempt to make sense of what it has experienced."
