I'm thinking about the airforce. After 22 yrs this new doctor who tested me for allergies said I have asthma. I do not have asthma attacks. It's not serious. I do not use my inhaler. The same doctor discovered a heart murmur. I don't think my asthma is a problem. Will this disqualify me. Should i tell the airforce about this or have their doctors make the assessment?

it all started with my allergies. at the time their was a fire burning in the country side about 15 min where i live which triggered my allergies severely. What happened here was similar to the san diego fires. i did have trouble breathing due to constant sneezing and my heart was racing due to taking sudafed. i'm only 100 ibs 4'11 which was said to be why my heart was racing. the doctors gave me singular to control it. i only took it for a couple of weeks. I dont plan to visit a recruiter until after i graduate this may with a BA. that was the first time where my allergies flared up due to the fire. I wont lie about it. However, i don't feel it will hender my performance in the airforce. I know i'm not a doctor but i know my body and know how i feel. What do yall think about the situation and diagnosis with the additional info.

IF you lie and cover up a medical condition and they find out later you lied and covered it up, they can give you a dishonorable discharge. Not worth it.

IF you manage to keep it covered up for 19.99 years and they find out just before you retire, they can do the same. Really not worth it.

You may have had a slight cold with bronchitis and an inhaler will help that. But instead of diagnosis a short term problem, they stick you with a diagnosis of asthma.

I suggest when you fill out the form you put down a question mark on asthma. Then you will get to talk to a doctor and you can explain one doctor said you had asthma but you are not on any medications for it. No singular, no other pills, and you do not use an inhaler. (Do not use any if you got them. That way you can be truthful about not using any medications and there will be none in your system.)

In the meantime, you can do some things to improve your breathing status. If you smoke, quit. Start doing some exercises to build up your endurance. If you can run a mile in 6 minutes, I doubt they will care if you have a slight wheeze.

Usually if you have asthma after age 12 then you are disqualified, also since you had a heart murmur they might be skeptical about letting you in. talk to your recruiter and he will most likely set you up with a military doctor who can determine whether or not your able to go into the air force.

Asthma past age 12 is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. There is a block on the Standard Form 89 (Report of Medical History) concerning it. Check "yes".

If you have asthma or a heart murmer then it will disqualify you from joining. If you really want to get in you will have to remain quiet and let the doctors who examine you try and determine if you have asthma or a heart murmer. From what I remember, there was really nothing they do to test for either and they only ask you if you have ever been diagnosed with asthma.

Can't you get a second opinion by anothe doctor? Maybe it's just hayfever or some other allergy prevalent this time of year.

It sounds like you don't really believe that you have asthma. Could you get a second opinion?
