It should never be used. It does not depend on the context. Do you think for one minute, that the slaves that were slaughtered would agree to that? THEY WERE MURDERED PEOPLE... the word did not mean friend, brother, my man..ect.. give it up. They died cruel, painful deaths hearing that word, they saw family being murdered hearing that word. If, by magic, some of the slaves could come back in today's time, and heard that word being used in any context they would cry, and be saddened, they might feel that, they were not sacrificed, so that word could become a term of endearment. I wish the rappers and people that think that word is OK, could talk to the real Africans who's lives were taken and try to explain to them, how OK the word is, "depending on the context" It is a slap in the face to the slaves who died every time that word is mentioned at any time, anywhere, by whomever uses it. There is only one context for that word and it is HATE. Being black does not excuse one, so that they may use that word to degrade their ancestors.

Personally, I feel that the N word has become way too mainstream. I think that given the history of the word it is disrespectful for anyone to use it regardles of their race. It is demeaning and damaging to our society. I know that a lot of musicians and other entertainers use the N word and have made the word "okay" but I think that when Black people use this word it undermines their history and the struggles that they have fought so hard to overcome in our society... and the fight is not over... By using such an inflamitory word as a sign of "respect" it is truly preventing progress in race relations. As far as white people or people of any other race I find it a complete lack of respect or just ignorance for what the word actually means and stands for...

In Detroit, Mi August 30, 2007 - they had a formal ceremony (casket and all) parade going down the main street - burying the N word. It's dead and buried! Pass the word.

Okay.. it just makes me laugh at how of all the racial slurs for all the various races..
Honkey, Chink, Frog, Wetb*ck, Wop, Raghead.. etc.. you hardly hear any of them anymore..
But the slur for Black People .. the N word.. aka N*ger ..
is still the racial slur that continues to raise it's ugly head even in this day and age..
Now here's the funny part.. it's the Black People who are the only ones who still use it.. and keep that racial slur alive.. they put themselves down calling themselves N*gers.
Craziness !!
I think if the Blacks stopped calling themselves N*gers.. then that racial slur would die down to a dull roar like all the other ones..

No. It's not 'okay' for anyone to fling insults, regardless of their own particulars.
The 'n' word is an insult. Positioning it as an 'endearment' was a bit of marketing genius, but it is an insult nevertheless.
Anyone who doesn't think it is, try calling someone that and have them reply, "your mother" and see if you like it.

I think it's demeaning to Black people, but most aren't aware of it. I also think it's demeaning when women call each other b**ches and gay people call each other fags. It simply perpetuates the negative whether we realize it or not.
That being said, no, I don't think White people should use the N word, I don't think Black people should say "whitey" and I don't think straight people should say "queer". It's not the words.......it's the intent behind the words.
It's along the lines of, I can talk bad about my Mom, but you can't. :)

Among themselves, they call each other that like it was a joke. I see and hear that on the streets sometimes. Many take offense to the N word only when a non black says it.

Hi
I'm black and I don't use that word at all. I don't call anyone that, and I don't want anyone calling me that. It's not OK to use that word, and I hate it when a lot of black people use that word freely as if it's OK. No one should use it at all.
