I came home at 3:30 and there were several trick or treaters and their parents sitting on my front porch waiting for someone to come home! One parent muttered, "about time" as I approached. I was seething but gave out what little candy I had at that time. Not a thank you from any of them!

What's with this "early" trick or treating?

I think it's ok for younger kids to be brought around early.
It's a little sad to hear of the parents comment. Hopefully the little kids saw in you the spirit of giving and non confrontation. It may have been the best Halloween treat they could have received.

take care.

I don't know about where you live, but here there are laws about when trick or treat is allowed. It starts at a certain hour, and ends at a certain hour. And the police see to it.
While I do not blame the parents of a small child to go and get back home before the rowdies come out, it is rude just to show up unannounced early, and possibly illegal.
Among friends, if arrangements have been made, fine, but to stranger's houses, no. And they shouldn't be going to strangers homes, anyway, especially with a small child!
and 3:30 is way too early, and I'm sorry, I would have said something to the mutterer, about good parenting skills that they did not have! And I would have got a thanks. I tried that last year with an older kid, I said "thank you?" and he said, "you're welcome, and laughed as he ran off the porch. I'm not afraid to say it again.
Did you know the people, or where they live? I would be tempted to say something.
Happy Halloween!

Are you serious? Were they people you knew?

No, I have never heard of trick or treating that early. That was very rude -- and I don't think I would have been as gracious as you were .... no, I KNOW I wouldn't have.

5:30, yeah, but 3:30? No way. And sitting on your porch waiting for you to come home? That is a new one for the books!

I'd say "Trick o treating doesn't officially start until X time, I just got home, come back when ToT starts and I'll be ready for you".

Quite rude of them to just sit there on your porch.

For all they know you weren't in the spirit of Halloween and didn't have any candy for them in the first place!

Its very early ToT. In my neighborhood it started officially at 7pm.

In some community's Trick or Treat hours are held in day light hours for better safety, but having someone waiting on your porch! I would not have given them anything. You were to kind.

If the kids are really little, then it's normal. What's not normal is to sit on someone's porch for God-knows-how-long to wait for a couple of pieces of candy. Freaks.

Call me mean, but the instant that parent said "about time", I would have asked them to leave because I don't participate in Halloween activities. Those children saw bad behavior get a pay off. I've seen so much rudeness and property destruction during Halloween (my car got egged by a bunch of teenagers AFTER I had given them candy) that I just don't get involved in it anymore.

i know...but why would they wait? how lame is that....they should have just went along their way. what if the person never returned? they'd be there all night and miss out on all the candy.

where i live they have a "curfew" so i can understand ppl wanting to start early but i still think 5pm is a decent time.
