The dog will be fine.
Chocolate has toxins, but it isn't as lethal as people often think. (Some people think chocolate is like instant death for dogs.)
Chocolate is only lethal in high doses. The chemical theobromine is the toxic portion. Milk chocolate has less theobromine than dark chocolate. Bakers chocolate has more theobromine than both dark and milk chocolate. So bakers chocolate is the worst for dogs to have, and milk chocolate is less dangerous.
The below text (between the double lines) is quoted from: http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/DOGS/chocolatetoxic.HTM
========
On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.
Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.
So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.
========
The average candybar is under 2 oz and is made of milk chocolate. So unless the dog is under 2 pounds, it isn't a "toxic dose".
The dime-sized piece of milk chocolate is too small of a dose of theobromine to be toxic.

He should be fine. One time our 4 pound dog ate a half of easter bunny that my son left on our couch. I called the vet and i just had to watch him for systems of poisoning. Here are the systems. Within the first few hours there is vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes there heart rate will increase... Just keep an eye on him. My dog never had any problems, but that was the last time he ever ate it. You do have to watch though cause once they taste it they will always want it.
edit 11/01/07: I decided to search it because some people are saying that it's not bad for dogs and i was just wondering about it so this is what i came up with. It was # 1 on my search.

Chocolate is very harmful to dogs, but only in excessive amounts. If it was only a small piece, and not an overly tiny dog, he sould be fine. My friend had chocolate coins on the table, and his dog jumped up and ate them all. He was a lab, so not huge, but he only got a stomache ache. You may want to contact the vet if he starts acting funny, or even to just see if they have any suggestions of things to look out for, however i am sure he is perfectly fine. Thanks for caring about what your dog consumes, many people would not bother to make sure thier pet was ok!

like everyone else said, your dog will be fine :) just make sure keep the chocolate out of reach to the little guy. it will take a good amount of chocolate to harm your dog, and if he ate to much you would know...my min pin climbed up on a desk and had a party with a box of See's candy last xmas, lets just say to much chocolate is like speed to a dog...the vet told me what to do to get her to vomit up the undigested chocolate and to keep an eye on her...she is fine now :) but still loves the chocolate flavor, so i get her carob dog treats...they can't tell the difference. good luck...sometimes it's hard being a dogs parent ;) we've all been there.

Cooking chocolate is the only chocolate that will do any harm. Ya if you give it like 10 candybars it wouldnt be good for it but a couple pieces wont hurt. My dog is 10 and we feed her malted milkballs and she isnt acting strange at all.

depends on the type of chocolate, and the size of your dog. Baking chocolate is the worst but to a small dog any amount of ANY type of chocolate could be bad. contact your vet or an emergi vet just to be sure

I am not saying that your dog should of eaten Chocolate, and it is a myth that it is bad for all dogs. My dog was ordered by the Vet to eat a Chocolate kiss a day for his seizures. And he doesn't have seizures anymore, it has been two years.

The chance of your dog getting sick after eating a small amount of chocolate, is minimal.
Different types of chocolate carry varying amounts of the ingredient that makes dogs sick.

The darker the chocolate the worse it is for the dog. You should be okay with that little bit. You might see him not feeling the greatest, just keep an eye on him.

How big is the dog? If its not a real small dog, It probably wont hurt him, but make sure the chocolate is out of his reach from now on.
