This was nonsense when it first started, as a Zen thought to make you think. Since you could put any kind of sound measuring device in the vicinity with a recording device attached that would show a sound was created, it makes a sound. The real question is, if unthinking people repeat the same words, do those words acquire any meaning from the repetition?

In the literal case of a tree falling, yes. Because sound is just compressions waves traveling through the air with various amounts of air compressed (amplitude) and distance of the waves apart (freguency) the air will still compress even if no one is aware of it. However, on a subatomic scale, when the laws of classical physics break down and we use quantum physics, evidence suggests that wheter or not an instrument measures something does affect the outcome of the event. However, since there is almost always something measuring it (any form of life, camera, etc.) this almost never happens.

That would depend on how you would choose to define "sound". If you consider it as an auditory experience, then no, there would be no sound as there would be no one there to experience it. If, however, you define sound as a physical phenomena, created by the compression and rarefaction of physical matter, then yes, a sound would have been created even though no one was there to hear it.

Of course it does. Sound is the result of vibrations in the air which still occur even if no-one's there. You wouldn't expect there to be no sunshine there because there's no-one to see it would you? Besides there would be insects and animals around. They can detect sound too.

That all depends on your definition of sound. Is sound the waves or the effect of the waves vibrating on your ear drum. Without an ear is there a sound? You can argue either way.

That can't really be a question.... How can anyone answer that? If no ones there to ' hear ' it. But on second thought, if you think real good about it, it really doesn't make a sound... think about it.

Yes it does. The sound is created and dissipates in short time. It does not matter if anyone heard it or not.

No, because no one would be able to hear it.
