Depending on the severity of the allergy and the kind of cat.
For severe allergies ( life threatening) obviously you would hat let the cat go.Howeever for mild to moderate ones, take an antihistamine. And if the first doesn't work properly, try another. Not all work for everybody. Also antihistamnes have a nasty habit of working wonderfully and then suddenly do nothing for you. In that case switch to another. And take it regularly. It is usually quite harmless to be on this all the time,
Also the allergy is more to the cats saliva so getting someone to brush the cat for you is a good idea.
ALso wiping the cat with a damp cloth should help.
If your cat is a long-haired cat and it is feasable I would have the vet shave the cat to minimise the amount of loose hairs in the air.
I have a cat allergy and am eternally gratefull that i can be managed with oral antihistamines.

It is possible to manage cat allergies, but you have to be prepared to make some adjustments.

Your vacuum is your best friend - use it frequently. One with a HEPA filter is best, I also use a HEPA bag. Get rid of carpets where you can as they collect dust and dander. Don't forget to vac your furniture regularly too.

Keep the cat out of the bedroom. It's important that you have some time for your system to recover/relax after fighting off the allergens all day.

I use Allerpet to wipe down the cat. It reduces the allergens being spread around. I know when I'm behind in vacuuming or using the Allerpet as my allergies act up despite the medications.

The link below has 10 tips for living with a cat when you have allergies.

Depending upon how severe your allergies are Claratin or Allegra may work. They weren't enough for me so I'm now on daily medications. A doctor will help you determine what is right for you. My allergist shakes his head, but he's used to dealing with people who won't give up there pets.

Top Tips for Beating Cat Allergies

The following tips have been gleaned from the many websites that present advice for allergy sufferers:

+ Keep your cat out of the bedroom. That's where we spend up to a third of our lives.

+ Try to keep your cat off the furniture. (Not easy.)

+ Brush the cat daily and bathe it weekly, while wearing a dust mask. (Better still, assign these tasks to a non-allergic friend.)

+ Install HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, and vacuum with a HEPA vacuum cleaner twice weekly. Wipe down walls and flat surfaces. Air the house regularly.

+ Vapor steam cleaners are also effective in killing off cat allergens.

+ Replace curtains with blinds, and carpets with tiles or hardwood flooring.

+ Wash bedding and other fabrics regularly.

+ Always wash your hands after handing your cat.

I had a cat for a couple of months and I thought I was going to die. The final day was so bad I couldn't breath and had to immediately call to have my sister take the cat. It took about a month to air out the house. I tried getting pills and sprays from the doctor and nothing worked. My avatar is his picture.

Bathe the cat like once a week.

You are allergic to the saliva that is on their fur from them bathing themselves. Go to the doc for allergy pills or shots. It can be done! My friend gets by ok.

If you have severe allergys than you should get rid of them, if its moderate theres medication, and for people like me with a slight allergy to them just being around them will build up your immunity.

My husband is allergic to cats, and I plan on trying out Allerpet: http://allerpet.com/

I've never used it but all the product reviews seem to be good, and I know people who have used it and swear by it.
