We have a stray male cat @ my house. We have 3 of our own. He has had bad experience with humans..he has been hit by a car (he limps-it has healed wrong) and he wont come near us. I feed him under our back carport. I want to know how to get his trust without scarying him away...any ideas? Thanks!

You need to build trust, if the weather allows, place the food out and sit where you can see the food and the cat can see you. In time the cat may approach you due to the associative factor of you being there at the same time as the food. He/she will eventually become curious, especially if you are never attempting to "move in" on the available food.

Canned food. When you have some extra time and notice he's around, stay outside and talk to him in a cute, calm voice. You could even call a humane society or someone you know to see if they have a humane trap that you could put food in. He walks in it and it shuts. He got hit? Is he ok? Poor kitty. Stupid people driving cars. Sorry. Soft food is a way to a cat's heart. But offer dry food and water as well. Too much soft food (once a day is good, maybe twice at the most) can give a cat diarrhea.

Good luck!

Never try to trap him. This will only further his distrust. I have put an old sweatshirt or something that has my scent on it near the food bowl, then eventually put it under the food bowl. This will help associate your scent with food. It will help if you can be outside when he is around so there is also an association with you and food. Do not try to approach him. Everyday move a little closer to the food and see how he reacts. Eventually he will come around. Just keep trying.

Food on a consistent basis, no trying to grab him, and just being calm and predictable in your moves. It takes a lot of time, but even scared cats do learn to trust people who don't try to catch them and who bring out food regularly. Keep a water bowl out there too. And give a food call when you walk out with new stuff, he'll clue in on that and know you're calling just for him.

The cat (she's still a kitten) was a stray but she didn't have bad experiences with humans. We just grabbed her and she bbecame a part of our family. You could call a local humane society and they can come get him.Try leaving a trail to your porch. It helps to give him a name. By calling him a name when you see him he can get familiar with your voice. Try not to scare him though, be calm and open. I hope he can get better!
