She is a golden retriever and her hips are pretty bad. About a month ago she went blind in her one eye and about 4 days ago she all of a sudden started limping. We think she may have had a stroke. She also seems to be deaf but we arent very sure. We are taking her to the vet soon, but meanwhile does anyone know what may be wrong with her?

I called her name while she was behind me and nothing happend so I am pretty sure she is deaf. When we go to the vet we will see what happens. She has past hip problems, from being kept in a small cage as a puppy most of her puppyhood by bad owners and then we got her. She has always been the same as other dogs though and can do anything any other golden retreiver can do. But we will see when we take her to the vet.

She also has a few tumors on her body. Such as her chest and her back.

She has kept off the leg all day and is almost completely healed. Thank you for your answers

Has she done anything to hurt her hips (jumping, falling, etc)?
What did the Vet say about the blindness in one eye? Did that start with the limping?

The only way to know for sure is to take her to the vet.

It's unlikely she's had a stroke, she would be far more debilitated than this. The blindness and limping could well be unrelated.

I can assure you that no one on here can tell you what is wrong with your dog. Aside from the fact you haven't really given any details (what leg is she limping on?) even a vet cannot give a diagnose online - and there are no vets on here!

I know you're just looking for reassurance before you get to the vet appointment, but posting medical questions on Yahoo can often do more harm than good. Some people mean well, but can put ideas in to your head that may have nothing whatsoever to do with your dog, but worry you all the same. Other people do not mean well!

Your questions are best saved for a vet. You could pick up the phone to a vet in the meantime, but I suspect they will tell you they can't provide any answers without seeing the dog. It's the truth I'm afraid!

EDIT: I think the answer above me is a prime example of what I've just said - people putting worrying ideas in your head! A lump does not necessarily mean cancer and you haven't said your dog has a lump, so why mention it?

Poor dog! Hip dysplasia is a common ailment in golden retrievers, definetly have the vet look at that! To test deafness try making a loud noise by clapping or with your voice, don't throw something that would make a vibration the dog can feel. Since she is going blind, you could help her find her way around the house a little easier with scents and textures such as mild potpourri and different textured rugs to mark new rooms or stairways. I would also suggest keeping her calm so she doesn't hurt herself anymore until she can get to the vet.

awwww!! I am so sorry your dog is having problems! 7 doesn't really seem that old for a dog to be going through all this, but I don't know the life span of a retriever. I have read before that retrievers do get hip problems though, so that is probably what is going on there....as for the blindness, i really don't know. Vet's are very expensive so be prepared with a lot of money once they decide what treatment to start. Good luck!

You really should take her to the vet sooner rather than later. I be worried about the limping that she'd pulled a muscle or has a slipped disc. Dogs are very stoic and a lot of times won't show pain. Good luck.

Including what others have suggested, you could check with the vet if her limping could be related to arthritis. The vet could prescribe medication to help alleviate some of the pain if it is arthritis.

One way to confirm if she is deaf or not is to call her name to get her attention without making any gestures. If she respondes then you know she can still hear you.
