Take it from someone who's been driving for 0ver 50 years, none of them were good. A few of the cars would approach 20 MPG but most were more in the 8 to 13 range. The Fords, Chevy's, Studebakers and Plymouths with six cylinder engines and overdrive trannys would get around 20 or a bit more but none were outstanding. Luckily gas, until the mid 70's was less than 30 cents a gallon. I saw it as cheap as 8 cents in Oklahoma City in 1954. In 1967 here in Austin, TX it was 25 cents a gallon.
