Hi,

My 1993 Jeep Cherokee's electric fan will click on as soon as the engine warms up and won't shut off until the engine is shut off. I know this sounds normal, but I've had this Jeep since it was new and the electric fan would only come on when the air conditioner was running or it was really really hot. This started to happen only after I changed the radiator. Could there be a problem with the clutch fan not doing it's job? The engine, however, never overheats.

There is no clutch on an electric fan. There is a sensor switch which is usually located in either the radiator or the engine block. Most are in the radiator. If you had the radiator changed maybe they screwed up the switch or shorted out the wires to it. The switch is a temp sensor and should switch the fan on once the engine reaches the preset temperature of the fan switch. There's also a parallel switch located with the AC switch so the fan will turn on anytime the AC is on. See if you can locate the fanswitch around the bottom of the radiator and try removint the wires from it. If that turns the fan off then the switch is bad. If it still runs then it could be the AC switch doing it.

The other answerer has no clue how a Jeep is set up.

If you engine fan(or clutch fan) wasn't working correctly the engine would be overheating. The electric fan doesn't pull enough airflow to keep the motor cool.

The switch that controls the fan is in the engine, right near the water neck. The second temperature switch that controls the dash gauge is in the block further back along the side of the motor.

Another possible problem, is that the relay for the fan is going bad. Sometimes a failure of that relay will cause the relay to latch in the closed position(fan on) but not allow it to return to the open position as long as the power is going to it.

Your correct. I might have been a 'bit' disrespectful to the first answerer. There are WAY too many people who have no clue what the heck they are posting here. Its almost reaches a point of lunacy. Yes, that person may have '50-years of restoring cars' But it doesn't change the fact that they were completely wrong.

Ok..no disrespect..but..the ratio of water to antifreeze WILL not cause the cooling fan to cycle as reported!!!
To ansawer your question, if the engine is NOT getting hot, the fan clutch is fine...Unusual for this age, but Fine.
Just to really be sure, now that it is cooler, are you using defrost? That will also cycle the compressor and so the electric fan..No...sorry, just had to ask.....The problem Has to be the sensor based upon what you are reporting..but let's check things before throwing money at this.
You should have one temp sensor at the water exit in front of the block over the thermostate cover. When the fan is running and engine warm...SHUT OFF engine, and disconnect it first. Start it..Fan one or off? Engine OFF..Ground the sensor wire...,,start it...Fan on or off?
What I am getting at is if the fan running cycle changes, it is the sensor. I THINK in 1993 the temperature sensor at the rear of the head..near firewall if only for the gauge.
Keep your fingers out of the spinny parts!!
Good Luck

I don't think people should be disrespecting other here.

If you had work done on the Jeep with the cooling system and this started it has to be part of the problem. Check your coolent to water %. They have testers for under $10 at wallmart.

If your anti freeze ratio is off it will casue problems, you need anti freeze to not only keep your fluid from freezing but also from over heating.

If the ratio is correct check to see if the system is full, is your water pump making noise?

You could have an AC relay issue, when you turn on the AC the fan stays running to help with cooling of the engine and the people inside. If the relay is dorked it might think the AC in on.

See if you have any problem codes also.

Good Luck.
