Cause the bad guys got guns too.

I can just see it now: "Halt....Halt now or I'll be forced to keep yelling at you because you have a gun and can kill me and I'm not allowed to carry a gun. No really halt. Don't make me use my mad voice"

Yeah.....probably a good thing that cops can carry guns.

Not all police forces do carry guns, though they often have special armed response units to call in for problem situations. However, those that do carry guns do so in order to protect the lives of themselves, their colleagues, and innocent third parties, and to provide criminals with a compliance incentive.

all police departments are reactive when considering equipment that the officers are issued. the police officers in many cities were not armed when the departments were formed. only special sections of departments were armed. then as the violence level increased and more criminals were using firearms and slaughtering police officers with out guns then officers in many cities started to be issued .38 revolvers. through the years as criminals increased the caliber of the weapons used so did the officers. this has been a trend for as long as there has been officers and criminals. Please understand that the first priority for law enforcement is the safety of the police officer. Everything is secondary

For self protection and as a visible deterrent against crime, and to shoot back.

In a gun free zone, such as Virginia Tech, criminals still carry guns while unarmed police and innocent law-abiding students get slaughtered and the body count accumulates.

Because criminals also carry weapons, many times better ones then cops. If a criminal had a weapon to pointed at me I would want the cops to show up and have guns on hand to neutrilize him.

To defend themselves and enforce the law.

However, in jurisdiction where citizens are denied the right to keep and bear arms, I think the police should suffer the same restrictions.

We are sometimes faced with threats of deadly force. If someone is shooting at you or coming at you with a knife you need to be able to defend yourself (and others) from this deadly force.
