would you be offended?

If you would be offended, do you think Jesus would like to see statues of his dead body nailed to a couple of wooden planks displayed prominently in your home or place of worship? Wouldn't a statue of him teaching others be a more appropriate way to honor him?

If you think that the crucifix is a great way to honor him, would you honor your parents in the same way, or would you find that horribly in bad taste, and take offense to anyone that honored your parents in such a way?

Okay, I keep hearing that "Jesus died for you, so that's why you should keep the symbol of his death" type answers. Well, Marting Luther King Jr died so that all American can be considered equal, should we keep a symbol of his death too? How about Abe Lincoln? Wouldn't you find that just a tad distasteful?

No graven images, commandment # 2. God is not suppose to be represented with any statue, a man named Jesus (idol), a cross, etc.

Some believers don't believe enough or simply don't understand what their "God inspired" text says.

That's EXACTLY the reason why Protestant churches do not contain crucifixes: the sacrifice was made and it's over and done with; the cross is merely a reminder of the sacrifice. Roman Catholics, on the other hand, literally believe that every time they "celebrate" the Mass, Jesus is re-crucified; therefore, it makes total sense that they would be the ones to keep Him on the cross in the form of a crucifix. It's awful, in my opinion.

p.s. -- in response to your edit, MLK, Jr. died because one prejudiced man grabbed a gun and decided to play God. I sincerely wish MLK, Jr.'s death would have resulted in all Americans being considered equal, but this is not the case; while the law may say it, human behavior proves many of us do not believe it in our hearts.

The Bible says;cursed is he that hangs on a tree and that Christ was made a curse for us in his crucifixion, anyone honouring or worshipping the crucifix is therefore worshipping a curse.
It would be more appropiate to remember Christ through an image of the empty tomb with the stone removed from the entrance, perhaps with the words 'He is risen'.
Better yet do as the first church done and read about Christ in the scriptures and meditate on the treasure of knowledge found in scripture.

Someone put on R&S yesterday that if Jesus were burned to death instead of crucified, all the believers would be wearing little bonfire symbols.

I believe that symbols remind people of what it is that they want to be reminded of. I don't and wouldn't put anything up like that, but I do have a few pictures of my late girlfriend up in the house. Haven't given that one too much thought.

Maybe I'll take 'em down. This question has me thinking...

--Good point! Idolatry has many forms , this one is one of the most notorious!
--No matter what excuse is made an image is an image, an idol is an idol!
--AND WE ARE TOLD:
(1 Corinthians 10:14) . . .Therefore, my beloved ones, flee from idolatry.

(Galatians 5:20-21) . . .idolatry, practice of spiritism, enmities, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, contentions, divisions, sects, 21 envies, drunken bouts, revelries, and things like these. As to these things I am forewarning YOU, the same way as I did forewarn YOU, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s kingdom. . .

(Colossians 3:5) . . .Deaden, therefore, YOUR body members that are upon the earth as respects fornication, uncleanness, sexual appetite, hurtful desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

--TODAY THERE IS modern day idolatry with sports, entertainment , political, religious idols made of real live people, the the cross with an idol of someone supposed to be Christ , most likely sickens him as you clearly said!

I was in chinatown in yokohama once and I saw a mechanical jesus on a cross... it would wriggle around and say something to the effect 'stop it, that tickles' and 'can I get a little help here?'

I'm sure a lot of people would be offended by it, but it was kind of amusing to me.

Well , I'm not exactly what you'd find if you looked up "worlds best christian" in the dictionary , but I belive that the crucifix is to remind us of Christs suffering and that he suffered and died on the cross for our sins

I'd be offended. But you must remember that since Jesus "died to save us" we must honor him by slaughtering sheep and celebrating his death (easter).

Not my ideal way of worshiping a god.
Thank goodness I'm an athiest.

You make an extremely valid point. I do believe that often, but not always, the teachings of Jesus are overshadowed by his death by Christians. Were all of his other miracles in vain?

Because 'teaching' isn't the focus of the religion. The focus is on his dying. Remember, Jesus died for you so you could go straight to heaven and skip all that tedious learning.
