I had a Hot Tools straightener and i liked it because it had a big plate...the only thing was it wasn't ceramic, so it's not as good on your hair. I think it cost about 50 bucks
I have heard that Paul Mitchell and Chi Irons are really nice and they're cermaic, but I think they are way above 80. You might be able to get one on ebay for a lot cheaper though.

I also have thick, very curly hair and I've had lots of straighteners before but the one that has always worked the best is my Chi. You can buy them at beauty stores like Ulta. It keeps hair straight and silky all day, but be careful with it, it gets extremely hot. Hope this helps!

I would try:
Tigi Bed Head Control Freak Extra Extra Straight Hair Straightener
With one quick blast get your freakin' hair straight as a board. It's like using a flattening iron without all the damage. Achieve the ultimate straight with a soft and sexy feel. Best results in damp or dry hair.

I'm not recommending this...but my daughters friend has thick wavy hair and she uses a regular iron, ironing board and a friend to help. Just not too close to the scalp.
I had a Hot Tools that worked great

Remington Wet 2 Straight Flat Iron.. Ok this is the best cheap straightener. I have used this flat iron for 2 years and works great. They say you can straighten wet hair which its really doesn't but when you have it on the highest setting it really straightens wavy hair.
