But does it mean you have to give without somehow letting yourself feel good about yourself?

when you give charity to someone...don't go around bragging about it....let it just be between you, God and the person you helped.

Secret Service in Charity

Mt 6:2-4 Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most assuredly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

How you have decided to give is not the business of other Christians."Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2Cor 9:7 So as you are able, make your giving private. Avoid announcing to others your acts of charity, and if people ask you, try to put them off - perhaps quoting what Jesus says here.

I think it's spoken in the context of people looking for the favour of men ( to be honoured by men )
The Lord is speaking of hypocrites. It's about being popular with people rather than giving glory to God. Being humble rather than puffed up?

Billy, you're added detail is interesting...i think that might be where humility comes in to it. I don't think the Lord's saying we can't feel good about making a difference in someones life by helping or giving - but if pride is involved then there's definitely a problem...
You're questions always make me think a little deeper. Bless you x

it is an expression...that the Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) said. which means that when u give money to the needy, no one should know, and u shouldn't boast about giving the needy to other ppl. feel good about yourself, no problem, but keep that inside of you.

Mathew 6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not [1] sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

In other words, give to the needy but don't call attention to yourself while you are doing it.

Works done in public...for your own glory...are not done with a pure heart.

If you are going to donate money to a hospital say....do it anonymously...don't put your name over the door...where everyone can see...oh look at John Doe...he must be a good person....for then your reward will only be here on earth...however, if you do it quietly...your reward will be in heaven.

It means that when you give to the needy do not announce it

Jesus was speaking out against hypocrits. doing a good deed is meaningful whe you don't have to parade it around. that is just makes it like you are doing it for your own benefit and that you are owed something. don't let the people who you are helping out know it was you.

Don't give to the poor for show. Your heavenly Father who sees what you do in secret will reward you.
