Seems to be more a "flavor" issue than anything in getting him to brush effectively. Anything with a strong "mint" flavor tastes "hot" to small children. There are many "Bubblegum" and "berry" flavors on the market (Colgate, Oxyfresh, ect) and most kids find them very tasty.
You might also buy him one of the "character" rotating toothbrushes as well. They aren't expensive and they seem to really hold a kids interest with flashing lights and many have timers in place so that he'll know just when it's time to stop brushing.
I'm sure you've brushed his teeth for him when he was younger, so he knows what and where to brush. It's great that you're taking a real interest in making sure he develops proper dental hygiene while he's very young... Habits formed early tend to stay in place for life!
Good Luck!

The action of the toothbrush stirring up the plaque and removing it is what gets your teeth clean - toothpaste just makes it taste better while you brush. Until the child is able to do cursive or joined up handwriting (rather than just printing) you will need to supplement their efforts at brushing by brushing for them. It takes a lot of dexterity to be really effective with a toothbrush so don't expect a child under about 7 or 8 to be able to do a really good job. When brushing makes sure that all the surfaces of the teeth are touched by the bristles on the brush in fact brush the gums as well, but gently. This way you will know that you haven't missed any areas.

the spiderman and spongebob toothpastes are for pretty young kids... im hoping ur not trying the whitening toothpastes on him already??? that can do some serious damage, AND lead to tooth sensitivity...
im not sure what you mean by tooth paste that isnt hot, as the last time we got the spongebob it was bubblegum flavored, and not hot at all???

All toothpaste is good ... its more of a matter of proper brushing technique.
I know my kids would eat most of the toothpaste instead of brushing their teeth for 90 seconds or so. Try twice a day to get him into the habit.
Show him by brushing your teeth and let him see how you do it.

He's probably not going to like the taste, but a little baking soda whitens teeth easily. It does shrink your gums if you use it frequently, so only once a week is best.

I think you should focus on the toothbrush. Select one with a rotating head. You may find one with his favorite character.
As far as toothpaste, try getting one of those with sprinkly things, like Close-Up's sparkling gels

why dont u jus have him use the kind you use?
make sure your also supervsing his teeth brushing... it could be that he isnt doing it correctly. kids generally dont like brushing their teeth, maybe he is just squuezing some tooth paste into his mouth and rinsing without actually brushing.
