My husband has the $400,000 policy through the Army, does that only apply to his if he's on duty, or is it 24/7 for as long as he's enlisted? I need to know if we need another life insurance policy on him if, for example, he died while on leave or on his way to work, etc.

I'm asking because I'm considering getting our enitre family covered in one policy because its discounted that way, but if he doesn't need it, I won't get it.

That is a good question, my husband and I took out other policies because we have children and wanted to make sure they would be well taken care of if God forbid something happen to one or both of us...
I have heard we are covered in the event something happen while we are on leave, after an investigation has been done ...
Get another policy , there is nothing wrong with that!

I worked Casualty Affairs and want you to know the facts....He's covered 24/7 as long as he pays the premiums. The premium are deducted automatically unless the member stops them. Sometimes suicide is covered and sometimes its not.....that's a whole 'nother story for another time. He should have had "the deployment walk" before he left regardless of how short notice his deployment was. SGLI is one of the stops on the "walk" If not, he should be able to change his SGLI at his deployed location. If it were me, I'd go ahead and get that other policy until your name is put on the SGLI. His parents are not obligated to give you a dime.

It is 24/7.
I do not know how the Army does it, but the USAF has a processing line when you deploy and one person you can talk to is the guy who handles that. You can change the beneficiary just before you get on the plane.
However he can also get the beneficiary changed even in the war zone. They have legal officers/technicians there that can do it without a problem. He needs to do it ASAP as leaving it in his parents name will really screw the family. If he gives you a song and dance about why he can not do it, you had better start wondering about the security of your marriage.

When I was on active duty the life insurance covered us 24/7 but with the changes ever since the Iraq war started, there may be a different level depending on where and how the veteran died.
P.S. FYI Vietnam veterans were covered for only $10,000, my how times have changed.

Full Time Coverage...Active Duty
If you are a full-time member on active duty, you are covered 365 days of the year. Your coverage is in effect during the period of active duty or inactive duty training and for 120 days following separation of release from duty

As faras I know, it applies 24/7 except in cases of suicide {or if you killed him for the ins money} just remember, it only lasts till he gets out or retires... also, the insurance is completely voluntary. you could get insurance thru someplace else and drop the SGLI , but finding a rate that beats SGLI *might* difficult. Do you know that you and the kids can be covered under SGLI also?i dont know off the top of my head what the premiums are for that, but its not to bad, IF you dont want to go with a private company.

the more the merrier, but be sure that insurance policy you are about to purchase isn't one of those scum-sucking whole life policies that take advantage of sm and their families knowing that they have a war clause in it and they can't collect if something happens to the sm in combat.
p.s. it is kind of creepy that you want to put so much money on him and he doesn't put you on his sgli. it's really simple and he can do it anytime.

Yes he is covered but before you decided to figure out how you are going to collect you might want to make sure he has the money going to you. Such love.

yes.. all day every day.
although, as someone pointed out.. if it were suicide or something else no one would receive it. there are a few other things such as not wearing proper protective equipment on a bike and what not...

This is an odd question. I mean, why would one worry so much about the life insurance someone had unless they planned to collect on it. Anyways, it will cover him as long as it isn't suicide or they found out you or someone you paid killed him.
