Actually, this typifies the moral shortcuts that people naturally want to make. Honest, ethical behavior is very inefficient. The bad guy always has an advantage because the good guy is hobbled by rules. And it gets worse if mercy is added to the mix. So guess who usually finishes last. Still, we recognize the moral high ground. We'd all like the practical advantages of the villain, but we'd also like the reputation of the hero.

i like this to a point. the person actually acts, instead of waiting for an angel to knock on the door with a new bike. However, resorting to theft makes bad karma.

That is good to ask forgiveness, now you need to finish it all by returning the bike, getting forgiveness from the people you stole it from, make compensation (Bible says 5 x's the value) and thne report to the police what you have done to get justice.
