You could defineltly go with dark brown furniture, add red pillows to accent a ultra suede couch in a dark choclate color. Beautiful! Yes, a rug adds texture to carpet. Try one in the same colors as your walls and any fabric colors to create a well- put together look. Good Luck!

First, do the walls have to stay white. Even in rentals, most landlords allow you to paint. Sometimes they ask you to return it white when you move, but if it looks good, they'll use your design choice to snag a new renter.
Dark brown really is a neutral meaning just about any color would work well. You need to think about what kind of mood or look do you want. Look at decorating mags for ideas. If you are completely clueless, a visit to some nice furniture stores will show the furniture in a setting. You will see how fabric, textures, style, accent pillows, lamps, area rugs all can dramatically change the look of a sofa and chairs.
Next, is it a living room, family room, formal or informal. If you live alone you can get a beautiful light color, but if you have kids, pets and messy mate, think about patterns. They are much more forgiving for spills and wear. A lot of manufacturers are offering custom made slip covers that can be changed for washing and/or change of seasons. White is so fresh and beautiful for hot summer months, but taupes, browns, cinnamon shades warm up winter days.
Leather is a practical choice, easy to wipe up and it comes in many colors nowadays. It can look a little masculine, but lots of folks like its feel and warmth.
Yes, you can put an area rug over carpeting, but if the carpet is in good shape, it isn't necessary. If you are really unsure of what colors for your furniture, you can choose a neut ral for sofa, loveseat and chairs, and give the room pop with pillows, wall art, large green plants, window treatments. Wooden or woven shades on windows can add color and texture, too. Drapes can be switched by season, heavy for winter, light and airy for summer, or no treatment at all. Altho, a white airy fabric lightly blowing from summer breezes always works on hot days.
Look at your wardrobe for ideas. We tend to wear the colors we want to live with. Are you onto the latest fads, a designer fashionista, a conservative pinstripe type, or a floral girly girl. You can incorporate your style into your space. Do what makes you feel good, and you will be happy with results.
Good luck!

Anything neutral, Hon. You'd be surprised at how quickly you'll get tired of a color, even if you love it now.
I think dark brown sounds lovely, as long as you punch it up with some pillows, throws, etc. in one or more of the following colors---apple green, persimmon or pumpkin, to keep everything from fading into the background. You can use those colors as other accents too, such as wall decor, lamps, etc.
I see no reason why you can't have a rug over your carpet---lots of people do it. Try to find one with the neutral background that contains some of your accent colors...Pottery Barn has a GREAT selection.

Of course you can put a rug on a carpet. We have orientals in some of our rooms over carpet and contemporary styles in others. It adds interest to a room, pulls in colors, and defines space. Brown is a neutral color that looks good with most colors. Just be sure you pull in whatever colors you go with in your rugs and accessories to make it work.

If you put earth tones on top of brown carpet and white walls that will make a very neutral room. I would suggest finding a curtain, picture, or an occasional chair that you love to start bringing color in. Then start from there. If you don't start some where it is hard to put everything together.

You don't need to put a rug over carpet, thats why you have carpeting. I would go with most any earthy tone color for furniture. That will make the room really nice.
