my shop has just bought a new router and we have been cutting aluminum sheets. can the dust collector hole both the saw dust and aluminum chips or will it start a fire?

If you are cutting aluminum you are probably using an oil for cooling. Mixed with wood chips the oils can become a real fire hazard. Probably under the right conditions could spontaneous combust.

I agree with "laid back" above. Aluminum chips probably would not combust (as compared to aluminum powder which might), but any oil/sawdust mix could be a real problem. Aluminum chips put on an aluminum oxide film soon after cutting which would inhibit combustion.

powdered aluminum is what they make firecrackers mostly out of.
