the 60gb and 20gb ps3 comes with the built in emulator chip which allows gamers to play ps2 & ps1 games. However, now sony is phasing out 60gb and 20gb versions with their new 40gb and 80gb versions. To make the 40gb version cheaper sony has removed the emulation chip from it and hence it has been able to save around 50$ per console, in the process making the 40gb version more cheaper than its other counterparts. However, the new 80gb version will support ps2 backward compatibility.

I've had my 60GB PS3 almost since it first came out, and the 60GB PS3 can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game.
Whoever said that to you, was talking about the 40GB PS3, they must have gotten mixed up or something. The 40GB PS3 is the PS3 that won't be backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

the 60GB can play PS2 games (mine has played every game i tried), the 20GB has had some of the hardware removed to save another £5.00 and allegedly won't be able to play the PS2 games.

They were completely false. 60GB editions of the PS3 actually have hardware based backward compatibility, the 80GB uses software emulation for backward compatibility and the 40GB edition, has no backward compatibility.
