I think birthstones are a great idea!

For just one stone, use the birthstone of the person wearing it.

Or, you could have 3 stones ... her birthstone, his birthstone, and maybe a diamond in the middle (if you don't want to completely eliminate a diamond)

Sapphires and rubies (which are just red sapphires) are the second hardest gemstone after diamonds. That means they won't chip as easily as other stones. I have a light blue sapphire that's in white gold with little diamonds around it just for the shine. The sapphire is "encased" in the band so it doesn't get hurt as easily (light colors are less hard than the darker shades). My grandmother has an emerald and while they aren't that hard of a stone, she's worn it every day for over 50 years and hasn't chipped it at all. Talk to a jeweler about the best stones for long term. They try to sell a lot of diamonds but should be helpful.

My engagement ring is a gorgeous aquamarine. It is not my birthstone but I love the color blue and it reminds me of the sea and/or the sky. I do have accent diamonds. However, I never have been a fan of the traditional engagement ring, I like to be a bit different. I would chose whatever you like, that makes it the most special.

A sapphire. Any stone that you think is beautiful would be appropriate for an engagement ring, though. If you want something that LOOKS more like a diamond, try a topaz - you can get them in yellow, a very light blue, and even clear.

I think a Emerald gem would be a good engagement ring even if it's not traditional.

I'm going to get blue topaz. This might help you out a bit...

It's a gem hardness scale. I'm not going to do the birthday thing, because my birthstone is a damn diamond. And the diamond trade is messed up. So I want blue because it's my favorite color, and I wear blue topaz everyday already. And it's a relatively hard stone. Pick something you like!!!

Good luck!!

Sapphires are usually a popular choice. As are rubies and emeralds because of their bold, vibrant colors.

Regardless of what you choose, make sure it is a hard stone. Some gems are soft in composition, and is not going to survive the wear and tear of daily life.

My engagement ring is a beautiful blue cushion-cut sapphire with three smaller diamonds on each side. It's gorgeous and very unique. I get compliments on it all the time!

Any your bf chooses for you!
Diamonds are usually chosen because they match everything.
For example, I love emeralds, but wouldn't want one because it wouldn't match everything I wear.
Last year I bought myself a dress ring - it's a pink topaz with little diamond shoulder stones, and I think it would make a lovely engagement ring.

I think smaller ruby or sapphire accents added to a traditional diamond ring are very pretty...
