The sense of the word "heroism" is a much debated concept in its usage.

In the ancient, Hellenistic form, a "hero" is someone who exceptionally performed in battle by massacring as many of the enemy as possible...

In modern times, a new notion that sprung up is that a true hero is one who doens't just go to war, but also someone who refuses to fight and truly weighs and questions his participation in a war.

So, it depends on which side of the fence you are on. Anti-war protesters might say that your husband's participation in the Iraq war is unjust, and therefore he deserves not to be called a hero. On the other hand, the government might trumpet that he is a "hero" that fought for some lofty ideals such as democracy, human rights... bla, bla, bla.

Personally, I think that the term "hero" can only be given to your husband by those people who served with him or by his commanding officers. Since they're the ones who saw him fight. I think that a real hero is a person who led his men or fought with his comrades valiantly. Blanketly calling all men "heroes" just based on their military service, I believe, is disservice to real heroes. Calling both a soldier who cowered under artillery fire and one who sacrificed his life to save the lives of his mates "heroes" is pretty far-fetched.

Any person or living creature who risks their life for another is A HERO!!!!!!! Even if they are not in action there is no way of knowing from one day to the next what danger he or she may be in. Anyone who is enlisted or has been enlisted should be recognized as a HERO to all citizens!
My husband served during the Cold War in Korea. He was not in action. But he was taken away from his family for years to serve for our country. Any person who gives their precious years away from family to serve for our country is a True Hero. Those who fight in action to serve our country ARE SUPER HEROS!
Thank you all for Your Service!!!!!!!!!!! If not for those who have served we may not be online reading or writing today. To All Who Have Served, MAY GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!

every serving and ex serving soldier is a hero, as someone quite rightly pointed out anyone willing to risk there life for their country is a hero.
unlike the cowards who state religion as their guide to a better life through war.

I consider the person who serves his/her country a hero. And u have people still sign up knowing they might be sent overseas is a hero. The person doing the dirty work so others dont have to get their hands dirty or their suits wrinkled is a hero. And last but not least i consider the family of that vet who deals with the deployments ,the not knowing about their loved ones, the TCOB while their spouse is away raising kids a HERO. They deserve medals for putting up with the bs just like us who served. People have cheapened the word by adding it to so and so kicked the winning field goal, made the last touch down, hit the winning run made the last shot. They make millions of dollars and cry when they think they dont get paid enough want to be traded and junk. I tell my son just cause this person won the mvp in the finals aint junk. Those who put it on and wear it deserve it. Those who win Medal of Honor, Bronze Stars, Silver Stars they dont consider themselves heroes those whose lives they saved do. Ask them to talk about and they downplay it. Ask the sports player and its all about him and what he did.

I would consider him a hero but most vets would feel uncomfortable being called that.

There is no heroic in war affairs, it is a terrible thing indeed.
You shall NOT kill tells The Holy Book and he didn't obey the words of the Almighty.
