What you called Now pirates. They were defending their land and sea.
The Americans lost the war in Tripoli and they 1804 ,signed
a peace deal with Basha of Tripoli after losing Philadelphia
The war remained in the anthem of the marines only
"to the shore of Tripoli"
The real pirates were the Americans.
The habit of taking people hostage was the work of most countries in the Mediterranean sea, not only the Libyans.
The bombing of Tripoli and Benghazi in 1986 was just a revenge of that war 1805.
Not one clue supported the allegation of the Regan's.clains.
and the Locker be trail was really a show of the revenge despite the fake clues put by FBI who paid to the main witness 4 m dollar to point out to the main Accuser

The event you askes about took place in the early 1800's. It was a war with pirates. We took Tripoli, and won the war. If you look back in the 1980's the US shot down 4 libian fighters. The first happend about 1982, in this one we were showing the we ment buisness, and flow close to the 12 mile limit, to draw then in to a fight. We won, 2 F-14's shot down 2 Mig 23's, then again in 1989, we were forced to fight, and agin the F14's shot dowm 2 SU27's. In 1986 we bombed the country over their support of terror groups..

This was in the early 1800's, known as the 19th Century, not 1908. The USS Phildelphia was a sailing Frigate not a modern steel hulled naval ship.

Yes, it was the First Barbary War, and Tripoli's fleet was able to capture the USS Philadelphia.
Tripoli is now called Libya.

The Barbary pirates had a habit of taking ships and holding the people hostage to get money from their countries. The US sent in the Marines who took care of the problem quite nicely hence, "to the shores of Tripoli."
