You can try uninstalling it using Add/Remove Programs (from the Control Panel) but you are probably better off looking on the Symantec site for their removal tool.
Norton AV gets in everywhere and the uninstaller it ships with is not up to the job of removing it properly so they had to write a special tool to do it more effectively.

Yes, and I think you are making a wise decision. MacAfee beats it hands down, it's cheaper, their support is far superior and all round it is a far better security system, to get rid of it click Start, go to control panel, click on Add/Remove programmes, scroll down list until you find either Norton or Symantec & uninstall it. If you are using Vista then the control panel folder is called programs and features.

Norton actually offer a removal tool on their support site. Download this and run it. "The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer."
I used it the other day to resolve an issue with no problems. Good luck!

Before you can remove it through the control panel you have to turn it off on the desktop. Right click the icon and open the panel, or if it has the selection, disable the program. Once turned off, you can remove. After completed, reboot before installing AVG.

I have had the same problem with both McAfee and Norton. The easiest way to get rid of them is to boot into Safe Mode, and then you can uninstall either of them, as they are not automatically started in Safe Mode.
AVG is good (so is FREE!). You can also try ClamWin - it is free too.

Like all the other answers, yes. But you probably will fine the error message or other little files that will still cause problems. What I have done is use explorer or free commander to go through the whole hard drive and delete these files manually,BE CAREFULL. Removing the wrong file will cause more trouble.
