it made no sound at all. I had my finger directly on the fret. what part of my finger is supposed to touch it and how hard do I need to press on it? I am new to this and wana be as close to perfect as a beginer can get. better to coreect the mistakes now then to get into a bad habit..

You don't start guitar yesterday and get a good sound today... this is going to take quite some time. I teach classical and acoustic guitar....and I prefer beginners to have a teacher but if you can't afford it there are plenty of good sites on the Internet to learn how to play....I wish that they had these when I first started. They also have some free sites....I'm not too crazy about those...there not very good....but I'll give you some at the end in case you want to check them out. Look at some of these sites and see what you think, some have a few introduction lessons and then you have to pay, or they want you to buy their Cd's, Videos, DVD's, or take their lessons online....there cheaper then going for private lessons.

I hear that youtube also has free guitar lessons, I haven't checked them out so I don't know what there like, but it wouldn't hurt to check them out.
I hope that something here helps you to get started.....maybe one of these sites will set you straight as to why your not getting any sound....(I'm not trying to be mean....but was your amp pluged in ?) Good luck with your playing, I've played for almost forty years now...and it's been the love of my life....your never bored when you can play guitar....you'll make it just give it time....it takes months just to get the callouses required to be able to play without your fingers hurting !!!!!!!!

You don't press at the fret, but just behind it, between it, and the next fret up the neck.

All it takes is practice, you'll find a way.

And think of investing in some lessons, especially in the beginning.

edit:
I repeat, you don't touch the fret, you press between two frets.

Continue working at it and in time you'll see progression. Just think--had you chose to learn on an acoustic guitar your problems would be magnified.

Curious what it *did* do, then...
Did it buzz? Maybe not ring clearly?
Was it quiet? Was it plugged in?
