Plants can be grown with a sterile aggregate base material of gravel or vermiculite that supports the plant but allows free flow of water and root movement. This is inside a pot with wide slots. These inner pots are set in outer waterproof pots or waterproof trays. The roots of a water grown plant are different from those grown in soil. Plants grown in soil will, over a period of four to six months, develop the water roots that they need to grow hydroponically. As the old roots decay they must be rinsed out, gently.

No way! If you grow cactus in water it will rot within 1 hour and start to die. Catus are native from the desert areas like africa where there is almost no rain. These cactuses sometimes don't get rain for about 2 months and are still fine. If you see that your cactus is starting to shrivell up that means that they need water. The only cactus i could see living in water is the chrismas cactus it is not really a cactus it is a jungle cactus it is native from the rain forests and yes i have already tried to put normal cactuses in water and they all died, exept the chrismas cactus.

I never heard of such possibility of growing cactus in water. I lived in Tucson for 12 years and saw many cacti that died for having too much water.
