i am cathloic but it seems like a cult when wou look at it from an outsiders prospective... we have a weekly gathering in which we chant, listen to and believe without question the words of an ancient book, eat flesh and drink blood, worship a man hanging from a cross and believe we are condemned to eternal punshment if we dont tell our leader everything we have done wrong. i just think is weird. i was raised catholic but i have been seriously doubting it recently. anyone else like that or am i going to hell?

cult /kʌlt/ Pronunciation Key - [kuhlt] –noun

1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

According to Webster. Yes.
But that's not a big deal. The word "cult" has just been demonized by the media because of occurrences like Jonestown, Waco, etc.

Accepting that the word "cult" is not inherently negative is the key.

Good gravy! Who has been overseeing your religious education? Obviously, whoever it is has been the picture of incompetence. Either that or you are a non-Catholic who is faking this whole thing to try to discredit the Catholic Church.

Nobody expects you to "believe without question." Ask questions and keep asking until you get some real answers! The idea that Catholics aren't supposed to think, study, read the Bible, etc. is completely erroneous.

We don't worship "a man hanging from a Cross" - we worship God Incarnate. That's a very big difference, and if you don't understand it, you need to find out what the difference is.

You are NOT "condemned to eternal punishment" if you don't "tell our leader everything" you've done wrong. Confession is a Sacrament by which we receive grace and we SHOULD receive it often, but we don't go to hell for not going.

Seriously, you haven't been raised Catholic very well at all if you don't understand the basic concepts.

A.) We don't believe without question. Who told you that?
B.) The flesh and blood that we eat is living. There's a big difference between that, and the cannabalism you're probably refering to. Even if you were to take a bite out of your arm right now, the flesh would die.
C.) Not confessing sins is not grounds for being sent to hell. Obviously God wants us to confess our sins, but if you don't, it's not an automatic one way ticket to hell. Besides the church has never defined who is in hell so we can't know.

If you have a false percepion of what Catholicism is then I can see how you might think the way you do.

If that's how u think of it. But any group that meets can be considered a cult if u think of it like that. I don't' consider it a cult b/c you are NOT brainwashed to go there. You go to church on ur own will power. Everyone has their own reasons. No one is making u "drink the punch".
So my thought is no.

Try something really dangerous. Just block out all that religious noise, and take some time to study the Bible. Especially the Gospel of John.

Pray for God to open your eyes and give you wisdom. He promises to do this.

Use genuine faith and give God a chance here. Try it and see what happens. Hey, you have nothing to lose.

we don't believe that we are condemned to eternal punishment if we don't tell our leader everything we've done wrong. the priest isn't our leader.

I was like that growing up with Mormonism. It didn't feel right. I think you're better off being honest in what you believe than believing something only because you are afraid of the concequences of not believing.

I can understand some of why you say what you say but, hey, like I heard some guy say this morning; at least they don't use machetes.
