I will have to say Autism. It would be a good topic because the treatments are controversial. For psychology, you can start out with "the refrigerator mom theroy" and work towards Dr. Rimlands "Infantile Autism". The strangest /worst treatment is "holding therapy" where a parent holds the child and tells the child why they resent them. Adult autistics really hate ABA because food is used to modify behavior- but the child doesn't understand the language and also doesn't understand what they want them to do. Hippotherapy involves the use of horses to calm a child. .
There is also guilt felt by the parents who vaccinated their children only to have them suffer a severe allergic reaction like seizures and this leads to autism.
The Autism Research Institute has statistics on the various therapies, medications, supplements, etc. This data comes from parents of autistic kids. They are the founders of DAN- Defeat Autism Now, a biomedical approach to treating autism.
This is why I think autism would make a better paper. The arguments of why each treatment works will be fascinating.

Bipolar 1.
There are so many different approaches to working with autism. Causation will be a problem for both topics. But at least with Bipolar 1 you have some conclusive techniques that work across the board. Not so with autism. Each case is different.

WOW! Lots of votes for autism, but I agree with "monsoon"s answer for Bi polar, due to the idea that you will run into it more often and it might be more beneficial to know about it, and you can be of more help to people. This is NOT to say that it's not important to know about autism too. Personally, I know a lot of people diagnosed with bi polar disorder, but not with autism, and that's mainly because autistic people often just get put in homes, more away from the general population, whereas bi polar people are all over the place. It has definately been more beneficial for me to know about bi polar disorder. And the only time I have used my knowledge of autism was when my partner worked for some group homes of people with autism, along with one young person I know.
So, to me it's a matter of which study will help you be more able to help other people as time goes on.

Both are very interesting topics. Both are ones people who are not medical doctors widely misunderstand or confuse with other disorders. I am sure you will find equal amounts of information on both subjects, as well as some surprising statistics and interesting and grotesque ways of treating the disorder historically. If anything it shows how far the medical field has come and how much further it has to grow. If I were you I would Wikipedia both subjects just to get an overview and pick the one that seemed more interesting to me. Everyone has different areas of interest. So long as the subject is an area of interest to you, I am sure your paper will turn out well. Good luck.

Autism is strange and a little difficult to grasp, however it is really interesting. It needs a lot of care through a child's development. Bipolar is bit more easy to grasp and understand and is more treatable in the conventional sense with medication. we don't know the cause of either, but there are a lot of theories. Check it out on Wikipedia and see which sounds more interesting

bi polar has been studied for a lot longer. Therefore, the information you will find is not as disputable as with autism.. With autism everybody says they KNOW what causes autism, and they will argue all day and all night against other people who KNOW it's caused by something else, but most people who argue the loudest don't even know for sure what autism is; much less what causes it.

Above me: Licensed psychologist and can't spell it. Some of you just kill me.
I think Autism due to the fact that they have recently discovered that diet can have a positive effect on this disorder. It would make for a more current and relevant report.
Enjoy your day!

I'd recommend Bipolar. You'll have just as much information as you would about autism.
Then there's also that I'm autistic and don't want even more student papers around going on about how the lives of people like me are horrific tragedies. That's actually my main reason. ;-)
