I go through these phases of depression, where at times I am really happy and other times, I am extremely sad. After my brother was murdered my emotions have gotten much worse. It seems as though my soul has weaken and I am vulnerable. I can't handle criticism from loved ones, I am not motivated like I used to be, I am failing on my test in school, it's hard for me to concentrate, things that made me happy in the past no longer do, and I am ultra senstive. How can I overcome depression without medication? What worked for you?

I was feeling alot of the same feelings as you are. I eventually had to go to the dr. Self healing is very hard and not real effective. You have to learn to cope with your fears and you anger and your hurt. You have to face them and put it in your head that your not going to live this way anymore. For every negative thought you have to come up with 5 positives. I went and was put on Zoloft. I had a fear of being put on meds etc. but let me tell you. I feel like im on top of the world never been happier. I am to focus and smile and I don't sweat the small stuff anymore. Depression is caused from a chemical in your head being off balanced... the zoloft helps that chemical to balance its self out. I hope this helps

Hi honey-pie...you may be able to deal with your depression, adjust to it, accommodate it's greedy drain on your time, thought & desires. You will probably not overcome it on your own. Even the strongest person should know - this is one of those times when it's OK to ask for help. Someone to talk to. To drag you out & DO something with when you don't feel like it. To give you a fresh perspective when all you can see is grief & misery. The only way to put this behind you is to share it with a friend(s) - even if it's a professional one. It's not weakness - some people just care too much & can't let go. All things will pass. Please find somebody to help you thru it.

I went through years of serious depression after my father committed suicide, it got so bad that I considered suicide myself. I tried a lot of different medicines and nothing ever made much of a difference. Over time, I learned that staying busy helps me the most. If I'm bored, or just sitting around, my mind starts going too much and I get really depressed. At first you just kind of have to force yourself to do stuff just to stay busy, then it gets easier over time. Also, find something that you can look forward to. Start with having something to look forward to at the end of the day, it really helps motivate yourself to get through the day. Eventually just having something to look forward to at the end of the week can be enough to get you through a whole week, and so on. Years from now, you will hopefully be able to say that the experiences that you have been through although may have temporarily weakened you, made you a stronger person in the end. Good luck.

I haven't overcome depression, I've just learned to be functional in spite of it. I focus on doing. What do I need to do? Get it done. There's a little satisfaction in that, which keeps depression at bay, and, mostly, our place in the world is to do things. Work, study, support people we care about, whatever. That we're dark and hopeless inside doesn't matter, if we continue to do what's expected of us.
I can't recall who said it, but some famous git once said "We all lead lives of quiet desperation."

Try to find someone to talk to so you can come to terms with your grief. If you don't have a counsellor or someone that can help you,try writing in a journal. Start an exercise program exercising causes yout body to release endorfins that you need to fight depression.Give yourself permission to greif ,but then try to feed yourself possitive thoughts before long you will wonder where the depression went.

Therapy. You may be hesitant to do it but after I finally broke down and gave in I was pissed I didn't do it sooner. I actually have fun at therapy and have definitely learned to deal with issues better. And medication is a life saver too, so don't completely take that off the table.

those are all normal things. see a therapist and look into not necessarily religious, but a spiritual life that interests you. surround yourself with people that love you. a good therapist is the most helpful though. and there's nothing wrong with taking medication. you dont have to go through this alone

You are not alone in this....i struggle with it too and alot of people do. I honestly think the best way to deal with it is exercise and just getting up in the morning and getting out...but its not easy, hang in there.
