why do most species living at high latitudes and high altitudes tend to be most generalists while those living the tropics tend to be ecological specialists?

High altitudes and high latitudes do not provide much food for the organisms living there. Animals are more likely to be generalists because they have to be willing to eat almost anything in order to get enough food to survive.

because the areas you describe tend to be harsh environments and only certain (fewer) species can survive.
