This is a good question. I starred it and gave Sandy above a thumb's up. Many of the answerers don't realize that insurance companies want this test when selling health or life insurance. Sandy (above) seems to have the data. I'm an MD, but I don't know the half life right off the top of my head.
If you smoke or chew and can avoid both for say 48 hours, you should test low and get a better rate on your insurance. 72 hours might be better if you can stand the nicotine withdrawal. And hydrate well. Good Luck !
My dad (who used snuff) filled out the form saying he was a non-smoker, and they found nicotine in his urine equal to a two pack per day smoker. My dad's answer was that they didn't ask him about using Skoal.
Added Note - Obviously, don't use nicotine gum while trying to clear your system.

Nicotine has a short half-life in the body. Every 2 hours, the concentration in the blood will half. It is generally undetectable after 24 hours.

what test is checking for nicotine? there are herbal drinks you can buy at headshops that will cover up EVERYTHING in urine tests... just be careful tho because they could check your levels of herbs and if you have rediculously high ones they'll usually catch on to what's up. but rarely does that happen.
still.... checking for nicotine??? that seems crazy. i know it stays in your body for 3 days so that would be my guess.

You can cheat the test by not putting nicotine into your system. Simple and easy and very effective.
