Last night I was at McDonalds with my son. When the guy hands me our cups, he grabs them from the top by pinching the cup between his thumb and pointer finger. His pointer finger was inside the cup and he just casually hands it to me.

So I say "Can I have a cup that you didn't stick your finger in" and he gives me a shocked/dirty look. Then he carfefully hands me another cup by handling it only from the outside.

Could I have handled the situation better?

no, he is the problem with the fast food industry, they have no idea of customer service is anymore. It used to be that people cared about their job and did it beyond the best of their ability. No its "here ya go, there are more people behind you, get out of the way, if its screwed up, its not my problem, wheres my paycheck" mentality.

Yes, you definitely could have handled it better, but we all make mistakes.

I remember my late husband trying to get a point across to a McDonald's employee too. He order a cheese burger, he said I want "meat, cheese and a bun". when it arrived, he opened it an looked at it, and of course it had everything on it. He dumped it on the counter and said "I asked for meat, cheese and a bun". This from a mellow easy going guy. I was shocked.

Maybe what you could have said would have been something like "I'm sorry, but I noticed you grasped the cup by placing your finger inside of it, would you please replace it? Thank you very much". The reason I say this is because the employee probably thought to himself "what a jerk" and didn't think he had done anything wrong. But by going about it a bit differently you have made him think.

I think you handled it fine. Fast food is not always handled hygienically. I got hamburgers from both Carl's Jr. and Jack in the Box with lettuce that smelled of cologne. At a sandwich shop an employee cut her hand while cutting my sandwich, then another employee started to use the same knife on my sandwich. I made her stop. My daughter was in a restaurant and witnessed an employee leaving a stall after a bowel movement not washing her hands before returning to work. My daughter reported her immediately to the manager. We need to speak out for our own health and safety.

No. You had every right to ask for a clean cup. The guys hands could have been in places I care not to think of. He may not have washed his hands after a visit to the bathroom, scratched his bum, or picked his nose. You are right on.....I would have spoken to the manager after the rude delivery of the cup after the request. This is the reason why most people get sick after visiting a restaurant.

There are probably a bunch of ways to say that.

You could have said something to the effect of "I have a phobia about germs--it isn't you, I won't even drink out of it if *I* do it."

Something like that... you get the picture.

That said--good for you. I can't stand it when people do that, because I actually have a thing about people putting their fingers in or on something that I am eating or drinking directly from. Some people are extremely hygienic... others are absolutely filthy. Why take a chance?

Talk to him like a friend. He certainly doesn't like working and is under enough pressure, just like everybody.
Say " Sorry, but..uh...you kinda put your finger in it...."
He'll look at you, like- 'he's not gonna complain to my boss, I don't really feel humiliated, lets just smile and give him a new one'
And you'll feel great about yourself.
We're a giant human family, man!
When you shock /hurt another, you hurt yourself. I don't beleive in the karma cr*p , but we are all the samw being.
There is no "other".
You're a grown man who probably masters his life, but he's not and doesn't.
The equivalent is your boss humiliating you in front of the staff for something not so terrible....

Yes, and yes, to answer your first and last questions.

It was rude (and I'm guessing your tone of voice didn't help).

You could have handled it better by wording it as something he hadn't realized he'd done, and using an apologetic tone. The apologetic tone is for implying that he's dirty and germy (which, handling money all the time, he is, but no one likes to think of themselves that way).

yep of course or you wouldnt be asking here
you know you were rude
you could have said some thing in the lines of
"may i have a new cup this one is dirty"
and if they put their fingers inside the cup again
point out
sorry but you keep putting your fingers inside the cup i am going to drink out of

Good job, hard to say where those fingers had been before they went in your cup :)

Maybe you could have said it in a more polite way, but you got your point across. I agree with you though, I hate it when they do that. I always have to correct them and ask for another. Especially when ordering a ice cream cone. They touch the cone after taking your money, and don't use any napkins......ew!
