I want to get my friend's son a nice sleeping bag as he joined the scouts and I am assuming at some point they will go camping. He is 6. I thought about one of those character ones, but as we all know things like that are not made to last and fads change with flip of the TV channel when you are young. Would it be better to get him one with a warranty that is manly looking so he can use it long-term or go for the character of the moment? Also, for those of you with suggestions, add links to sites with the bags you suggest. Thanks for your help!

At 6, he is in Cub Scouts, and they mostly do indoor and summer camping, so the bag does not need to be anything too special.

A summer-weight bag from Target or WalMart would be fine. I like combining this with a fleece bag. Fleece is cool because it also makes a great blanket for cool nights.

I wouldn't get the character bag. He will outgrow that pretty quickly. I think that a more manly looking sleeping bag is the way to go. You also need to take into consideration where you live and what time of year he will be doing most of his camping. Some bags are warmer than others, so if he will be camping when it is very cold you need a really heavy sleeping bag. Go to www.scoutstuff.org. You'll find lots of cool stuff for scouts.

A warm one? No, really, lol... just kidding. I would suggest getting him a regular (not character) sleeping bag that is rated for the temperature in the region the child lives in. Many sleeping bags at WalMart have innovative fastening devices that make it easier for young children. Also, going to a sports store such as Academy Sports or somewhere similar might be a good idea as they have people with experience in the gear as salespersons. Best of luck to you!

Forget "manly looking" or "character", go to a proper camping shop and get him a decent warm one. Little children especially can get really cold sleeping in a tent and the cheap sleeping bags really aren't suitable for anything more than sleepovers in a heated house.

I'd recommend Milletts, but I'm not sure if you're in the US or the UK?

If he is a Boy Scout, I would go to the Boy scout council to see if they have any there. There is usually a shop in the council office. if they dont have any, try a store like Sports Authority or an outdoor shop or even WalMart. A lot of the ones with superheroes on them are not meant for outdoors (if the intent was to get one for camping). They are cute though!!! =)
My dad & brothers used to get theirs through catalogs or from Sports Authority (big sports/outdoor store) though.

If he is 6 he doesnt need an expensive "manly" looking one. Get something that you think he will like. Cub Scouts sometimes camp but usually its indoors (cabin camping).

Any Superhero he likes I guess! Ask him what he likes!
