When I was a teenager, over the course of a few years, I lost both parents, a beloved uncle, and two younger brothers. I've been a Christian all my life, but yeah, I cried. It was traumatic. I think that one would have to be a bit on the sociopathic side to not mourn the loss of people they loved and cared for. My beliefs regarding the afterlife don't negate the fact that I'll never see these people again during this earthly existence. As for doubts, all thinking people have them; however, if death were the great end, that wouldn't strike me as a complete tragedy. No more suffering, no more pain, no possibility of punishment in the afterlife. It's not the worst philosophical outcome. It amuses me when people think that the possibility of nothing after death would somehow frighten me.

My best friend and lover died October 6, 2006, and today seems to have been the worst day since I saw her laying in the casket.
A friend of hers found my email from the online guest book and has been sharing experiences and thoughts with me, and it has been an extremely rough day.
I have a zeal and lust for life and all it has to offer, but sometimes as I lay in bed, I wish I could just close my eyes and never open them, so I can be with her, wherever she is...and if she is nowhere, then so will I be.

I'm Irish and we have Wakes for the dead. In which we have food, family and friends get together, bring pictures and items of the loved one to share memories.
A Wake is a celebration of the person's life. Which as an atheist is more important to me than what happens after death.

That's REALLY pathetic and irreverent. Just cuz no one will mourn when your bacon's fried doesn't mean the rest of the world is as cold and lonely as your sty.
Many people are very attached to the ones they love and will feel a great loss along with a peaceful glory and hope. So the tears now will bring healing. Without tears their will be no healing.

So true. I mean, they've finally gotten off this $h!t Hole they like to call it as and don't have to deal with the brainwashed and stupid people of the world! There's no afterlife so you just cease to exist, and it seems like all their troubles would be over. I don't understand why all of them wouldn't just commit suicide instead of pissing and moaning about their sad lives!

They cry for their loved one. They will miss them, and they cry for the past, everyone does if they have any feelings. I cry when any animal is abused or is killed.
The celebration comes later when they are reunited.

Not a theist, myself.... but as a former Catholic: trust me, they do party. Wakes usually have lots of booze.

Everyone is a sinner, so we wouldn't be sure if they entered heaven or not. Also, we're human, I'm pretty sure it's ALRIGHT, as a Christian, to miss them.

What about those who have wakes instead of funerals?
But I still like your question.
