There is no real "best" distance. If you are watching HD programming you can sit closer than if you are watching SD programming on your set.

Here is a site that gives you a calculation on viewing distance. (they recommend 11.5 ft for a 46 inch set)

I own a 46' Lcd Bravia and personally I view it 12 feet away. Now Im not saying this is the healthiest way of doing so, but it really helps me get more involved in what im watching.

The recommended viewing distance is 3.6m.
