I am interested in becoming a veteran advocate. Do I contact the VA?

My husband was medically discharged from the military, and we were treated horribly by his unit. No soldier and/or family should have to go through what we went through. I cannot go into detail about our situation, I'm sorry. If we can help anyone else, we want to. How do I/we become a veteran advocate?

1. Most veterans advocates are members of various veteran organization like VFW, Disabld American Veterans, Order of the Purple Heart, etc.
2. Any horrible trreatment your husband may have received from his unit is not the responsibility or fault of the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is a matter for the Department of Defense and their Inspector General.
3. You don't indicate the reason for his medical discharge. If it was for a condition which existed prior to entry and was not aggravated by service, the Defense Department has not responsibility for that either. They are restricted to one course of action under Title 10, United States Code (Federal law) and that is to discharge the member without compensable disability. If the condition happened while he was AWOL, through his own gross misconduct, or was made worse by his own willful neglect, then Title 10 United States Code, Section 1207 requires he be discharged as unfit for further service without disability.

Join a Veterans Advocate Group and participate actively in its activities particularly airing the grievance that you experienced.
