Then it would have been harder for the US to enter the European war without that staging area to launch an invasion. The Nazis could have used Irish and Spanish allied military units to help police England with the Germans overseeing them. This way, they would not have had a fractured front on either side. They could have attacked Russia after consolidating their gains in the west.

you are very correct

they had Britain beaten but then Churchill scraped together a group of bombers and bombed Berlin as one last sign of defiance before parliament started talking a surrender. this PO'd Hitler so much he switched from bombing the British airfields to bombing London instead giving the RAF a chance to rebuild and then knock down the German planes, ending Hitlers chance of invading England.

otherwise though, in a "what if" scenario youre probably very close to what would have happened it England was invaded right after Dunkirk.

it would have been years before the Americans could have invaded Europe, maybe from bases in the middle east or africa

would have added years to the war and europe might still be speaking german today

In 1940 when the NAZIs were taking over every Western European nation through Blitzkrieg and sanctions Hitler was not forming the military plans or strategies as of yet. Unlike Josef Stalin he was leaving it up to his military leaders early in the war. With the lightning fast invasions of Poland, France, Belgium, Norway and Sweden Hitler knew his forces were spread very thin and his bigger fear than England was Russia. After nearly annihilating the British forces at Dunkirk Hitler felt that England was isolated as an Island nation. Hitler had his allies in Italy and Spain to help isolate the island nation of Britain and his expectations of the Japanese campaign in Indonesia, especially in the British colonies Hitler knew England would not be in any shape to have the capacity to stop him from his true goal, the invasion of the oil rich Russian caucuses even with the help of the Crippled USA who already had a 2 front war. Hitlers "Bonehead" mistake was underestimating the British resolve and the American industrial might. Keep in mind, Hitler never intended to include Western Europe in his 1000 year Reich but only to control those nations with a new society, a Euro society. Hitlers dream was to have his Reich cover the entire Eastern Europe continent including his arch rival.....Russia. By creating a Euro society within his Reich and controlling all of Eastern Europe and Russia he would essentially have complete domination of the world markets and resources therefore his dream of a world dictatorship would have come true.

Nah, not a good idea, it would open yet another front, and that is something Hitler definitely did NOT want to do. Situation in Europe was complicated enough, a third front would have been tactically impossible to justify. The amphibious landing on the coasts of UK would have been a disaster, as the Brits would have all the advantages. Logistics of supplying the invading troops ? IMPOSSIBLE... land supply lines are difficult enough to defend, the Channel would have been simply not defendable. There was a good reason they did not invade... that plus the fact the Brit food would have decimated Germans in matter of days. Also, the ancestors of Penfold were mean beasts indeed... :)
ROBERT, you forget Brits had radar scanning the Channel when the Krauts had no idea what radar was, bombing of the airfields would have been difficult indeed as the Brits would know they are coming hours before they would get to their targets. There is a reason they used V2 rather than a frontal assault on RAF. They were also not as good flyers as the Brits. Supermarine Sptifire and the Merlin V12 were works of art, nothing Luftwaffe had was as good, a fact not lost on the Germans.

The WW2 would have been over a lot faster. For starters the a good part of the German Army would have drowned in the English Channel as the Royal Navy was still for the most part unscathed. Further the RAF was still a factor, they would have been invading without air superiority. Finally what German troops did get on the shores of Britian would have been thrown back. Remeber England had just been reinforced with the troops who had evacutated from Dunkirk. While it is possible that Germany could have conquered England it would have been a pyrich victory.

Your question supposes a successful invasion of the British Islands (not impossible, and certainly planned - Operation Sea Lion)...

YES, the Germans could have pulled it off, and that would have GREATLY changed the US involvement in the War.

Fortunately, The Bavarian Corporal (Hitler) had a habit of sticking his nose into military affairs and countermanding the plans of his Generals and Admirals... IF he'd let Goering continue to bomb the airfields and radar sites the RAF would have been wiped out, and the invasion could have progressed.

Read Len Dieghton's "SSGB". It really does a good job of covering this possibility. They wouldn't have used the Spanish because Hitler despised Franco and due to their racial policies when you get right down to it they weren't to sure about the Irish. It is very likely that without a base,England, the USA would have stood at home.

If Hitler hadn't been on so many drugs, he
1. never should have invaded Russia.
2. Been happy with the gains he got without going to war.

Many other good points have been made--the Irish as much as they dislike the english would have known they were next--strategically--Ireland could not have been left unmolested. Most likely scenario would allied power would have been in ireland-used air power to disrupt supply to england--and liberated england first.

I would have to think the Royal Navy would've made it hard for the Hitlerites to make an amphibious landing...but that's just me.....not to mention lack of air superiority.
